2020.09.26 23:36 TypeVenus In defense of Kiryu Coco and the incident in Bilibili

I am writing to Coco kaicho and all her supportive fans and viewers, regardless of region and ethnicity. I am writing because I care about kaicho, hololive talents, their account management team on bilibili (not bilibili themselves) and the revenue they get there, not because I give a shit about the incident. I am analysing only the premise and the result of it.
Kaicho is smart, she clearly understands what content attracts fans and viewers. She knows what overseas fans want, and she knows Japanese to talk to Jp fans as well. Point is, she knows her audience and knows how to cater to them.
To my understanding, in asacoco, kaicho posted a photo of her analytics and within it contained the amount of viewers from Taiwan. The audience from bilibili noticed this and was triggered (from the word "Taiwan"). The stream in bilibili was taken down and received a lot of hate from this. Normally bilibili broadcast hololive streams live as well, but now anyone under hololive are not able to stream there entirely in the following weeks.(I do not understand the bilibili side of things because no one is willing to say anything about the incident and instead only focusing on the result of the incident. If there is anything important please tell me)
I believe this was completely accidental and it was an oversight on her and her management.
If she deliberately did it to trigger chinese viewers, it implies she understands how the viewers in bilibili is easily affected by this topic, and she would like to either discard her bilibili viewership or post a political statement. If this is the case, putting it in asacoco will be a complete waste of time, and a very stupid attempt. She could just tell management to stop managing her bilibili account, instead of burning herself knowing full well she is soaked in gasoline. If she wants to post a political statement, she is definitely allowed to do so, but definitely not in the character of Kiryu Coco because why would she need to.
Again, I personally believe it was completely accidental. One reason why bilibili fans were so pissed was because earlier that day, haachama read her youtube analytics and of course it contained the word Taiwan. That time bilibili fans were much more lenient because they believe it is accidental. The reason why the viewers in bilibili were pissed was because kaicho did it right after, and they believed she did it with full intent after knowing about haachama's incident. I believe in the span of several hours, it is not possible for the hololive management to understand the situation and warn their talents about it, since there was much less reaction when haachama did it. So when kaicho did it, her management should have already given her a pass on the content for asacoco, or else kaicho would have cut it out. It is unlikely she knows about haachama's incident at the time and her doing a similar thing is purely accidental.
I don't think Kaicho hate the crowd from bilibili enough to insult them anyways. One of the reason why the bilibili viewers think she hates bilibili is because she never streamed there exclusively. But know that she actually cares a lot about the crowd from bilibili. She openly accepted the nickname they gave her in an asacoco, and she even voiced those sponsorship messages in Japanese television programs, but instead it's for the subtitles team on bilibili. If I were you guys I would give her the benefit of the doubt.
I would like to offer my surface level advice purely based on maximizing profit. If an enterprise were to expand to China, know that the amount of audience is large but the political climate is extremely sensitive. Because of a different upbringing, they focus more nationalism and any implications of politics will be a large risk. Regard this as a simple uncontrollable condition, like the unpredictability of weather. There are talents that really do not care about borders and will deliberately spend their time investing in the chinese market, and the return is large. For future streams, the word China or Taiwan or Hong Kong should never be brought up. Kaicho should also understand the full functions of the bilibili platform even if she dislike the platform or doesn't use it, because the management team sure uses it, and youtube streams are actually streamed in bilibili in real time as well. Unless she is completely off bilibili, she has to be careful even on youtube. China has a large market, if hololive is not careful with their actions, the company as a whole risk a very large portion of preexisting fans and revenue, which the talents who invest time on bilibili fully deserve. Hololive management should also be extremely careful with anything loosely related to politics, and can react succinctly. There will always be antis and blind nationalists, to make them less vocal and loud, precautions must be made.
To the chinese fans who are frustrated, I understand it might be hard since you might not be able to see your favorite idol for quite a while due to the hololive ban on bilibili, but I hope you can stop spreading any type of lies or unneeded momentum on the hate bandwagon. If she has intent, then ignore her streams from no on, do not spread misleading and radical opinions to other forums. In the future, ignore any kind of implications of politics because that's not their intention, no way are they going to deliberately talk about politics especially behind an avatar with risk of a third of their audience getting triggered. Its really retarded to think maybe not every single human like every location on Earth. Please, it is not healthy to be triggered by every single thing in sight. 请不要乱带节奏,多用脑思考。
To the fans from everywhere else, if you found out your talent may have done anything that may be risky or may steer up a political shitstorm, give them the love and support instead of feeding into politics. No matter which side you are on, no one gives a shit. If you hate them from this, then just leave and watch another one, god forbid vtubers are human and they have opinions. No one idol is absolutely perfect, and if you truly love them, you would have understood them and correct their mistakes instead of bringing in more unconstructive critique. Please, it is not healthy to be triggered by every single thing in sight.
Please be careful kaicho, I understand it is a pain to cater to bilibili or wherever, but the true fans who fully support you there are the ones suffering. You do not owe them an apology, but they need to see you address it. Hololive and your colleagues who invested their energy there are affected by this dumb incident, you and your colleagues fully deserve the financial and emotionally support from China. Please be careful in the future. Us fans will always be supportive and compassionate.

Questions Answers
At what point do you consider the initial conception of a character to become irrelevant compared to their current perception? That's a really tough question to answer. I think part of the reason we wanted to make this film was to, in a sense, canonize Pepe. You have to keep in mind that when Matt created Boys Club and it started to get popular, it was just a tiny little indie comic. So when it switched over to the internet and started becoming a popular meme, it pretty quickly became divorced from the original character. And Matt was just a by-standard to all that. Seeing it morph and change over time.
When we see SpongeBob memes with Hitler moustaches or whatever, we understand that this is a derivation of the original. And that's because Nickelodeon has spent millions upon millions of dollars building up that character and his brand. Or like for me (Giorgio) growing up, you'd always see bumper stickers of Calvin from Calvin & Hobbs pissing on a Ford logo or a Chevy logo or whatever. But there was never any question looking at those bumper stickers that what I was looking at wasn't Bill Waterson's opinion on domestic cars and trucks. I knew it was a bootleg. And I kept those two narratives separate in my head.
With Pepe, Matt didn't have that luxury. He's just a single indie artist who created an image that for some reason really resonated with a TON of people. I'm not sure if there's any reliable data on it. But I would say that Pepe is arguably one of the most popular cartoon images in the world. And it's all happened organically, simply based on the power of Matt's artistic abilities.
I don't think that Matt (or us, for that matter) is under the delusion that Pepe will ever be "taken back." Pepe has grown far bigger than anyone could've imagined. But what we do know is that we made a film that tells an important and relevant story about a meme that a lot of people around the world care about.
-Giorgio
Matt, did you consider your artwork political before Pepe took off? And did Pepe’s reappropriation to political symbol change the way you approached your art, now knowing it could be changed without your consent or control? In general, I have two main artistic endeavors: fine art and comics. In my “fine art”, I reflect on themes of ecology, family, animal rights, and power violence….to name a few. I consider it more philosophical than political. In my comics, particularly “boy’s club” (the origin of Pepe), I celebrate and lampoon dumb-ass stuff like television, smoking pot, barfing, eating pizza and dumb-ass commercials from my childhood.
I believe that reality is different for everyone- it’s based on what one chooses to focus on. I cannot control what others perceive, but I can control what I consume (spend, eat, watch, read, and scroll)and put out into the world (art). I think that depression, whether biological or psychological, can be remedied by widening your perspective beyond your immediate self/culture. There’s a big amazing imperfect beautiful world out there. I choose to make art to go beyond language and express my feelings through characters, critters and spirals.-MF
Where do you see Pepe in 5 years? 10? I think if there's any lesson to be learned from the past 10 years of Pepe online, it's that none of this is predictable. When we were making this film, we were struggling to figure out how we would end the film.
Then, one morning, we awoke to our phones being inundated with messages about Pepe being used as an icon for a peaceful protest moment in Hong Kong against an authoritarian regime. Definitely weren't expecting that.
We quickly mobilized and reached out to a very talented journalist on the ground in Hong Kong who filmed a "holding hands across Hong Kong" peace protest where thousands of people linked hands, holding bootleg Pepe dolls. It was a very moving experience to receive that footage and start watching.
We were overwhelmed with messages from protestors from Hong Kong. About their deep connection to Pepe. That he was a symbol of their struggle. Of their sadness about the current state of affairs. But that he was a symbol of love. And that they wanted to make Pepe's "frown turn into a smile."
And then there's Pepe on twitch. Which is also wild! So...who knows!?
/Giorgio
What do you feel is the best way to prevent icons from being used as hate symbols? There isn’t really a way to prevent an icon from becoming a hate symbol.
Our culture moves in strange ways. I think the best we can do is be critically engaged with cultural discourse and be honest about what people’s true intentions are. There isn’t one interpretation of Pepe the Frog or the Swastika or the Peace Sign or the McDonald’s Logo or the American Flag. This movie is about media literacy more than anything else. What we can do is recognize when a symbol is weaponized and used for antisocial motivations and call it out. Matt has a right to fight against Pepe being used for propaganda, profit and extremism. / AJ
the below is a reply to the above question
To not care and ignore it. Stop being such a pearl clutcher. Caring about the society you live in isn't pearl clutching - - it's being an engaged citizen.
Nothing will get better if we don't honestly engage with reality and work to change it.
/ AJ
the below is a reply to the above
The pearl clutchers on the right who believed DnD and Harry Potter was causing people to become satanists would have said the exact same thing. Why do you believe they were wrong but you are right? Two things can both be true. It can be the case that people posted racist pepes just as jokes. In an earnestly ironic way. It is also true that actual racists then took those memes and used them for their own purposes.
Bad-faith activists with bad intentions saw how Pepe was being used, and who was using it, and coopted the symbol as a recruiting tool. The KKK and neonazi groups have long used pop culture icons to try and ingratiate themselves with the main stream. This is literally a tactic that David Duke openly developed and advocated in the 80s. And it's precisely why Richard Spencer used Pepe as the icon for his podcast. And why the Boogaloo bois use Pepe patches on their sleeves.
Far-right movements have always tried to recruit dejected, impressionable, angry, young white men, by coopting the relevant pop cultural artifacts of the time. And Pepe was a uniquely perfect tool for them. It was similarly true of punk rock in the 80s. Neo nazi's coopted a leftist, anti-authoritarian, organic movement, and retooled the message for their own use. This is nothing new. Pepe is just the most recent iteration.
To the larger question, though, "Is Pepe a racist symbol?" No. And Matt would agree. As you'll see in the film. Neither Matt nor us, the filmmakers, are doing any "pearl clutching." Part of the issue here is that professional racists used the media, who took the story (mostly unquestioningly) and ran with it, doing all the difficult work of disseminating their message. We're simply trying to give this story some much needed context and honesty.
Also, side note: fascism is real. Satanism is not.
-GA
the below is a reply to the above
Satanism isn't real? You don't believe there are people who are satanists? What an absurd statement. Was Anton LaVey not a real person? What do you mean by "Satanism isn't real"? When you speak to Satan, let us know. We'd love to interview him.
Also, one of our editors edited a great film you might like called "Hail Satan!"
the below is a reply to the above
Whether or not Satan exists has no bearing on whether or not the belief system or ideology of Satanism exists. So again, why is one pearl clutching and the other isn't? Because to people like me, they appear exactly the same. Again, Fascism is real. And kills people. IRL. Satanism, as an ideology, might be real. But the dangers of the philosophy are wholly imagined.
the below is a reply to the above
I agree with you, but I would also extend this to modern day fascism in the US. It's the left's modern-day satanic panic. What you're doing is looking at a few morons on the cringe fringe and painting their followings as being way bigger than they are. It's like when people still opine about the KKK when there's only a few thousand members left. These people are irrelevant, and by painting them as some menacing threat you're giving them more power than they deserve. Have some fascists done shitty things recently? Sure. Were there satanists in the 1980s who were doing shitty things? Probably. But that doesn't mean either one posses the threat to society their opponents believe they do. Just ignore them if you want them to lose their power. Why is that so hard to do? Fascism is a joke, until it's not. My father grew up under Mussolini's regime. He's sufficiently worried about the dangers today. He's been a pretty reliable person in my life, so I'm going to trust him on that perspective.
A thought exercise for you might be, perhaps consider the possibility that it's easier for you to ignore these issues, because you're not particularly under personal threat. But that is not the case for lots of other people. There are literal kids in cages in the border. There is an actual white nationalist working in the white house. Our environmental policy is being rapidly unwound by know-nothing anti-science zealots. The abysmal response to COVID has been completely consistent with a deeply inept and corrupt government cravenly self-interested in corruption and their own self-preservation. The most recent COVID bail out package was yet another massive gift for the rich and for corporations. All of this has to do with "ignoring fascism."
/ Giorgio
the below is a reply to the above
They were there under Obama as well. Does that make Obama a fascist? Again with the "muh fascism" hyperbole. Do you hear yourself? You sound like the tea party under Obama calling him a communist. What evidence do you have for any of this? You're doing exactly what the tea party did under Obama only turned up to 11. You just can't see it because it's your bubble this time. In twenty years, we're going to look back at this moment and laugh at people like you In the same way we look back at fundamentalist Christians in the 19850s or anti-communist in the 1950s. Have you ever asked questioned the fascist Boogeyman you believe? What if it turns out that maybe you're being a bit hyperbolic with this stuff and you blew things way out of proportion? What if your documentary ends up being pointed and laughed at as an example of a moral panic we all lived through? I'm not sure this a productive conversation any longer. I believe the administration's response to COVID should make it overwhelmingly clear to anyone curious about who is being hyperbolic and who is engaging with reality. Be well my dear friend. /Giorgio
Why did you decide to make a movie about a meme? Pepe is a very special meme. It’s been around of 10 years which is an eternity for anything online. It has even outlasted several of the websites it was popular on. Myspace being the primary example. So while Feels Good Man, really focuses on Pepe as a character — we obviously get into “memetics” as larger topic.
I think the change caused by social media is the most important story of our generation and Memes are a significant way the human experience is communicated online.
In terms of politics, memes are a way in which supporters of a candidate can feel like they are a contributing to a movement. Memes can be used as way to build coalitions and maintain an engagement. They also allow you to share facts and analysis in a way that is contagious, funny and thought provoking. This is obviously and good and bad thing. / AJ
Matt, you tried to kill Pepe but that didn't seem to go as planned, are you now glad that he didn't stay dead? Arthur and Giorgio- what was the craziest story involving pepe that you came across while doing this? Hi LuckCosmos
In the same way Wile E. Coyote can run off a cliff over and over or be flattened by a train and return unscathed, Pepe can return to form. Matt never thought that “death of Pepe comic” was going to be a thing people noticed or paid attention to. It was a six panel comic done during a moment when he was frustrated and wanted the whole Pepe controversy to go away.
——
We filmed an interview with an occultist named John Micheal Greer, in the middle of the night, in a historic library that Edgar Allan Poe used to write in. At first we thought the interview was going to be quirky but it actually got very deep. At various times during the conversation I got goosebumps. That conversation had it’s own gravitational pull.
This film took us on a pretty wild global scavenger hunt (some of which didn’t even make the final cut).
The craziest thing honestly, was how positive the film-making experience was. This film was made by a group of friends and artists. We worked really hard on it and that hard work paid off, both in terms of making a good film and strengthening our friendships
/AJ
Do you see “Meme Magick” playing a role in the success of Pepe? If so, what do you think meme magick is? When this project started I didn’t give Meme Magick much credence. I knew about the numerology of 4chan posts and the quasi-religious memes 4channers made.
This is a film about a stoned cartoon frog but it’s also about the cultural imagination. It’s about our shared zeitgeist. So we decided to include a discussion of Meme Magick as one of the many ways people ascribe meaning to symbols.
In Feels Good Man we interviewed Susan Blackmore who wrote the text book on memetics and we also talked to an occultist named John Micheal Greer. His definition of magic echos that of Dion Fortune: “Magic the art of causing changes to take place in consciousness in accordance with will.” He talks about Pepe both as sigil and as an omen. I tend to agree with him.
If memes like the Cross or the Virgin Mary can be considered Magick - Why can’t Pepe? /AJ
1. Do you know who posted the original Pepe comic to 4chan back in the day? 2. What do you think is the reason that the Pepe illustration is so popular? Like in an artistic sense. Is it the big eyes? Hi Thanks for this.
Re 1: Nope. We have no idea who first posted it to 4chan. Matt posted the “Feels Good Man” page from Boy’s Club Issue 2 on his Myspace page. From there Pepe spread as a reaction image to a variety of message boards…. Shroomery. http://BodyBuilding.com and 4chan.
Re 2: While making the film we asked a version of this question to everyone we talked to. It’s not a question that has a really definitive answer. My feeling is that Pepe is innately nostalgic. He feels like a muppet or toy from your childhood. I also think frogs carry some sort of weight for people. Even in nature, frogs appear funny, cute, off-putting and vulnerable at the same time. /AJ
What are your thoughts on twitch taking this image and transforming it in so many ways and basically creating a language out of pepes and peepos? Do you think its a good use of the image of pepe the frog? The Twitch stuff is wild. I'm personally fascinated by linguistics and how memes/emojis have developed into incredibly sophisticated forms of communication. I've also had to learn up on a completely new lexicon, dialoguing with people on social media now about this film. It's both thrilling and terrifying...but ultimately pretty incredible. / Giorgio
One of my dreams is to get into documentary work, either in film or podcasting. What's your biggest advice for someone who wants to be a documentarian? Also, I just want to thank you for making this film. Media literacy is something I care deeply about, and it looks like you guys have made a powerful tool for teaching it. I'm bummed I never got to see it in theaters (I was gonna volunteer at the Wisconsin Film Festival), but still hyped to see it for the first time in September! Thanks so much. We're really bummed about all the festival cancellations too.
As for advice on dreams of getting into documentary work.....Just do it!
Both me and Arthur are self-taught. We both came from creative backgrounds. But honestly the biggest hurdle is often overcoming your own insecurities and trusting in yourself and in the process.
Also, write a lot. It seems counter intuitive. Some people make documentaries to avoid writing a script. Which is understandable. Because writing a script is really hard. But the truth is, making a great documentary involves writing a ton. Both writing down your own ideas. But also writing paper edits based on the voices you've captured.
And you're constantly re-writing throughout the process. Challenging your own thesis/ideas as you collect more footage and more stories. Don't expect the final narrative to resemble your initial intentions. And just enjoy the ride. And be open to adapting the story in your head with the story unfolding in front of your camera (or microphone). Don't try and force it if it's not on the screen. / GA+AJ
Matt’s art is so good I agree. I was a fan of Boy's Club well before this film. Matt is releasing a coffee table book this fall called Mind Viscosity. It showcases his full wild Furie-ness in all its glory: https://www.fantagraphics.com/mindviscosity/
If you only know Matt's comics you should check out his fine art as well. /AJ
What community do you think makes the best Pepe memes? Also, what was the best Pepe meme you guys came across while doing research? My favorite Pepe meme creator is Peekaso. His animated gifs are pretty next level. You can find them on a variety of gif sites.
While doing research, The rare pepe that made me laugh the hardest was a version of the “young rock” meme redrawn as Pepe. I was eating a sandwich and had to do a spit take.
I also think Joe Bennet’s #savepepe animation is very touching. https://vimeo.com/188898661
/AJ
What was the most unexpected part about making this film? Honestly, getting into Sundance and winning an award. It's admittedly a really weird story to explain to someone with no context for any of it. So to be accepted to the biggest film festival in the country was a pretty incredible. And then to win an award was even more wild. We walked into the awards ceremony fully committed to the idea that we would win nothing and were just there for canapé and cocktails. /Giorgio
What are the best or weirdest bits you had to cut out of the documentary (didn't flow, couldn't get rights, etc...)? In being the subject of the documentary, what's something you ended up changing your mind about regarding the whole affair? The weirdest bits? Hmm. In our rough cut, we had a broader discussion of memetics as defined by Richard Dawkins in 1976. That got cut for time but wasn’t necessarily “weird.”
We cut some discussions with various Pepe Meme makers. The weirdest of these scenes we are going to release as an outtake soon. I don’t want to spoil it here. It was one of our favorite moments and it was a bummer to cut it. “Kill your darlings…” as they say.
We talked to a lot of great talking heads as well. We had an amazing discussion with the graphic designer Steven Heller who wrote a book called “Iron Fists: Branding the 20th-century Totalitarian State.” That didn’t make the cut but will be released as a stand alone short. He’s a real American treasure. /AJ
Matt - Despite the general negativity surround Pepe, do you think there is a chance people’s perception of him as an alt right character will change? Arthur and Giorgio - What about the film do you feel helps promote this change in perception? Legit can’t wait to see it hope you guys have nothing but success! 1. As a white male living in this culture, I have to take responsibility for my own white supremacy. Perhaps the lesson here is to confront my own cultural programming and upbringing and help to bring awareness to my friends and family. I believe that there is an awareness beyond our physical and mental selves that is pure love, pure loving awareness, and that everyone can tap into it. If we don’t do it this time around, maybe next time. We are all just extensions of our parents, our grandparents, and on and on forever. The fact that Pepe is a stoned frog that likes to chill may be able to help. It’s good not to freak out. It helps others remain calm. -MF
2. I think all we can hope for is that by telling the story, people understand the context more fully. The power of documentary filmmaking is the ability to build empathy for people and places and experiences not their own. The film also has a TON of rad animations of Pepe, Landwolf, Andy, and Brett. I think people are going to be pretty psyched to see. Anyway, I think once you understand someone's story, it becomes more difficult to ignore it. That's true of everything. So I guess our hope is that maybe people be kinder and more patient with one another. This shit is hard man. / Giorgio
I met you back at the Portland Indie Comics Fest, Matt! Just wanted to say that it was super cool to meet you back then and am excited to watch this documentary! Is there anything you guys are most excited to share with this new docu? Wasssup! I’m excited for people to see the cool animations and the insane story- also my suit I bought at Men’s Wearhouse looks rad on the big screen- I love the way I look. Unfortunately I left it at the JFK terminal. /MF
In terms of securing rights for showing images etc..., I imagine it's easy to get Furie's cooperation, but was it ironically difficult or expensive to show any Pepe-derived stuff in the documentary? Good question Cory. Making this film was a totally unique process. We licensed Pepe from Matt. Then we acquired the additional footage and memes in a variety of ways. I think we downloaded something like 32 TBs of Pepe videos and memes.
Some of our footage we paid for but most of it fell under fair use. Our fair use attorney Katy was a huge part of our collaborative process. /AJ
the below is a reply to the above
What was the weirdest fair use issue you came across that Katy helped you unravel? Were there any that surprised you either in the "I can't believe that's fair use" or "I can't believe that's NOT fair use" scenarios? Shania. Twain.
You'll have to watch the film to understand /AJ
the below is another reply to the original question
Is Matt particularly open to licensing Pepe to outsiders? I imagine he's pretty wary given the circumstances, but it'd be nice to see a Non-racist Pepe Ice Cream Truck. Matt trusted us - so he licensed Pepe to us. That said, he recognized that the film wasn't a puff piece. Everyone wanted the film to hold up on its own artistic merits. Furie never gave us guidelines of what to include or not include in the edit. The journalism and cultural critique contained within the film are the work of the filmmakers.
I have no idea about a ice cream truck. I can attest that Matt does love ice cream very much. I've seen him seen many hot fudge sundaes. /AJ
How do you think art has changed in the world of the internet, now that people can copy/mistitle or give content out of context? What can be done to stop the spread of misinformation? I believe that our true power comes from our ability to be with eachother and to listen to one another. Having the world of the internet in our pocket, always “on”, gives us this false sense that we are more connected. I get the feeling that we are actually more divided. Our attention is divided. Our ability to “wonder” about things is gone (just google it!) Art for me is about legacy, creating something bigger than yourself that can speak to the human/animal/plant/mineral condition. That will always be the same. Art is a place we can visit, we can make it or just experience it. It should be therapeutic.
Take a break from the internet, take a walk, go for a swim, talk to your pastor. /MF
Hi everyone! I have 3 questions/comments: 1- Is the documentary going to be licensed for more regions? I tried getting it through Vimeo, but my country wasn't on the licensed list. I'm from Brazil. Didn't try on Apple yet, though. 2- Have you guys seen Jordan Peterson's videos/comments about Pepe? He's done a symbolic/metaphysical analysis with his friend Jonathan Pageau, and it's actually pretty interesting. Look it up on YouTube. 3- Matt, I hope you're not sad about the whole Pepe situation anymore, looking back now. It's a fun character, nothing more than that. We know how the Internet is (trolling/joking/sarcasm), and how the media reacts to things (anything for clicks ands ads). I know it's been a rough journey for you, but I don't think Pepe represents anything bad, and I don't really feel like people actually stole him from you. In the end, you should be proud for creating something popular that so many people enjoyed! Thank you for your work! Thanks a lot for your time! 1- I’m not sure about Brazil yet. We have different arrangements with different distributors in different countries. But I don't think we have anything currently planned for Brazil.
Film distribution is a dark art. Our hope is that plays everywhere, but film distribution is unfortunately not always in the artist's control.
Certainly there are parallels with Bolsonaro and what is happening in the U.S.
/AJ
2- I have watched it. It’s the one where he is wearing a frog head right? People love Jordan Peterson. Maybe it’s because he sounds like Kermit. I’m sure JP would be morally appalled by the messy state of Pepe’s bedroom. “Clean up your room Pepe!” / AJ
3- Thanks man! - MF
Thanks for the questions.- AJ
Why doesn't Matt sell Pepe (or other) shirts on his website? I would really like one, but I'd like to endorse the original artist. There are shirts available, provided by vandals and con artists. I feel like a good amount of money could be made selling Pepe merch. Thank you! We will have that up on our website soon actually! Thank you for asking. We have a poster for sale right now too. www.feelsgoodmanfilm.com
the below is a reply to the above
On the movie website? Or Matt Furie's website? I'll check out the poster. We'll be selling film related t-shirts but will feature Pepe prominently
the below is a reply to the above
I'll keep an eye out! I also wanted to add that the movie looks very promising and I've heard nothing but critical praise so far. You should feel very proud and I hope you get all the recognition you deserve! Thank you so much for saying that! much appreciated. The film is out today!
How does it feel to be in the group with all the famous people who saw their art recouped by reactionaries and fascists, you are in the same category as the wachowskys, Carpenter, Palahniuk and also Fincher, all country music, the anti globalization movement, etc The biggest and most challenging part of being a human is to overcome this idea of “us vs. them” and to find the best way to approach a situation. I try and see the big picture, or at least the grey area between the black and white. When Pepe was first added to the “hate symbol” database, my initial reaction was to say that it’s just a phase and it will change. I’m not sure if it’s locked in to our American culture’s collective conscience yet, but it is bigger than just our American culture….it’s a global phenomenon. How do we overcome division? How do we make sense of duality? It’s a personal journey that begins with ourselves and our creativity. Pepe is my baby and I want to take care of him and treat him with love and kindness, especially now that he is an angel. /MF
Hey guys! Has anyone read the comic, Megg and Mogg by Simon Hanselmann? I've always considered it a female Boys Club, and I wanted to get your takes on it if you've read it. Cheers. I love MegaHex. I think Simon is super talented and love how popular their comics are.
It should be noted that Brett in Boy's Club is a fun-loving gender fluid blue creature who loves listening to Shania Twain and dancing in his undies. xoAJ
Question for Matt, Now that you have this film about to be released, do you think there will ever be a wide release of Duck and Chimpanzee's rock and roll summer? Haha, that’s a deep cut. “I would love to make love to those chimpanzees.” Who is this by the way? /MF
the below is a reply to the above
That movie holds a special place in my heart. This is BH btw. <3
Is it called “Feels Good Man” or “Feels Good, Man”? They’re not the same thing, after all. Is it "Encino Man"? or is it "Encino, Man"?
We say it with the comma's memory implied. But for graphic purposes, and to stay true to the comic, it's "Feels Good Man." / Giorgio
What’s is the First first drawing Of fells good man ever? Boy's Club issue #2 is the first appearance of Pepe saying "Feels Good Man." Matt posted a page from that comic onto his personal myspace page. The scanning and uploading that page is our film's inciting incident. It's a very silly moment to have as an inciting for a feature film. But we treat it with a tongue-in-cheek seriousness it deserves. xoAJ
Did you think Pepe would become as popular as it is? Virality can't be predicted. Life is a wild ride. /AJ
Where will I be able to watch Feels Good Man? It's currently available for pre-sale on Apple TV and Vimeo. Link in the op. Come Sept 4th, it will be available on several other platforms, including VUDU, Fandango on Demand, Alamo on Demand, and a few others. We'll have it all up on a link tree on our website. www.feelsgoodmanfilm.com
Where/how can I watch the film in the UK? Big announcements coming soon. Suffice it to say, it will be very available sometime in the fall. ;)
What inspired you to make Pepe? In the early 2000s, before youtube, Facebook, internet memes, etc. there was a site called http://paperrad.org. It was a wall of psychedelic-child-like visual creativity full of animated GIFs and 80s trash culture. It also featured home-baked comics that seemed to really be speaking with a kind-of family humor vibe- comics about inside jokes you would have with your closest friends. The style was raw and unpolished. I was really inspired by the comics on that site- especially “Alfe” by Ben Jones. Pepe even looks like “Horace” from those comics. I was also inspired by Ren and Stimpy, Beavis and Butthead, The Far Side, Jim Woodring’s “Frank” comics and the way he draws frogs, Mat Brinkman from Fort Thunder, The Simpsons, The Muppets, R. Crumb, and Frog and Toad kids books. / MF
[deleted] Normal_Now. We were big fans. Last October he posted that he was giving up his account. Ironically, because he was being harassed by "pepe heads," in his own words. He was "interviewing" all the potential buyers of the account. And when I told him what we were interested in doing with it, he thought it was an appropriate use of the account. You can find him now at Respectful_0. We're going to make an in-memorium website with all of his old tweets.

2020.09.26 20:35 oaij Is Hong Kong still considered ROW for AOS purposes?

Trump signed an Executive Order that will subject foreign nationals born in Hong Kong to the same immigrant visa quota and wait times as those born in mainland China.
Is USCIS adhering to the executive order at the moment? I still don't see Hong Kong being singled out as a non-ROW country in the latest visa bulletin. If a HK-born applicant filed I-485 under EB3 ROW category (which is current now), will the I-485 application be rejected by USCIS?

Respect Kaecilius

"People think in terms of good and evil, but really, time is the true enemy of us all. Time kills everything."

Background

Kaecilius was a powerful and long-serving member of the Masters of the Mystic Arts who joined after the loss of his son and wife drove him to depression. After twenty years serving the Ancient One, Kaecilius became disillusioned in her teachings since all his work and practice failed to help find closure and believed she was hiding the answers he sought after. Kaecilius then formed his own order from like-minded sorcerers known as the Zealots, aimed at opposing the Ancient One and utilizing practices she forbade. Using the Book of Cagliostro, Kaecilius tapped into the power of the Dark Dimension and started attacking the three Sanctums protecting the Earth from interdimensional threats. He hoped to bring Dormammu and the Dark Dimension to Earth, believing it would result in the cessation of death since time does not function the same in that reality. However, Kaecilius failed to realize that the immortality promised by Dormammu came at a horrific cost.

2020.09.26 12:49 Avaale Everything I found out when researching into Extraction of Snail Secretion Filtrate & Cosrx's Cruelty-Free Claims

I do not consent to this post or any part of it being reposted on any social media (including but not limited to YouTube, Instagram, Tumblr, Snapchat). I do not want to see screenshots of my post on any influencer's Instagram handle/website/blog without my explicit written consent. DM / Modmail me if you would like to share this post or use content from this post on your social media with appropriate credit to the sub and me.

Some of you might have noticed me, lurking in the corners of this sub, shoving my HGs in your faces.
One of those HGs happens to be the Cosrx Advanced Snail 96 Mucin Power Essence. I've recently started on my third bottle and each bottle lasts me around a year (I don't use it everyday, it's part of soothing, calming arsenal). So I've been using this for atleast 2 years now.
Recently, I saw Insta stories that this was not cruelty-free. Now, I'm not strictly cruelty free ( I mean theoretically I am, but practically I TRY to be). When I first started using it, cosrx had clarified that it was indeed cruelty free, I also saw a couple of secretion extraction videos and was convinced.
But, I didn't look as deep as I could have. So I'm doing it now.
Warning: This post is content heavy.

Cosrx's Cruelty Free Status

Let's start with what cosrx says, Ethical bunny had contacted cosrx, in 2018 and received this reply.
Excerpt " First of all, we do not test on animals. Animal testing is illegal in Korea. Please note do not test on animals, even for animal-driven products. Also, we currently do not sell in Mainland China"
Freethebunnies.com also lists cosrx in their cruelty free list. Their requirements are as follows
  1. They do not test on animals during any part of production
  2. They do not order materials from any third party vendor who tests on animals
  3. They do not have third parties test their products on animals on their behalf
  4. They do not sell their products in countries that require animal testing by law (i.e. mainland China)
  5. They are not owned by a parent company who tests on animals.
However, two of the biggest cruelty free databases, beg to differ
In Logical harmony, cosrx is on their pending list of brands ie "These are brands that Logical Harmony has reached out to about their stance on animal testing and is waiting to receive a response or is waiting for the brand to finish completing the documents to be listed on Logical Harmony. Once a response is received, the brand will be moved to the Cruelty-Free Brand List, the Brands to Avoid list, or the Grey Area list depending on their response. If a brand is in the process of getting on the cruelty-free brand list, they will be left on the pending list until the process is complete."
And in Cruelty Free Kitty, cosrx is neither on List of officially cruelty free brands or list of non-cruelty free brands

So I'm going back to cosrx's statement
" First of all, we do not test on animals. Animal testing is illegal in Korea. Please note do not test on animals, even for animal-driven products.
While in 2017, South Korea banned animal testing where alternative testing methods are available, the practice continues since there are loopholes to exploit. [1], [2], as of 2019 atleast.
But just because companies in South Korea, still list on animals doesn't mean Cosrx does.
> Also, we currently do not sell in Mainland China"
Beauty and soul states ***"*there are some loopholes (there’s always loopholes)! Hong Kong and Macau, whilst still being governed by China, do not carry the same law which insists that all skincare products must be tested on animals. Therefore, by launching your products into the Hong Kong market and then using mail order / online channels for distribution further into mainland China, many Korean firms have found a loophole into the Chinese regulation without having to compromise their cruelty free status. At the time of writing (Jul 28, 2018), we have confirmation that the following brands use this tactic to avoid animal testing; Cosrx, Mizon, Whamisa, Thank You Farmer, iUnik, Heimish and Helloskin."
So they were technically stating the truth.
Cross-checking cosrx's statement does not convince me, either way.

The Supplier and Extraction Methods

Even if we take cosrx's statement at face value, all of this has only to with the testing part. What seems more important is the question of whether the snails are hurt in the process of extraction.
I found a few amazing articles on the issue,

Thank you u/sonjavad123, for sharing the last two. All great articles and I highly recommend you read them, for a overview on known information about snail secretion extraction.
In the case of Cosrx, according to the Klog article, linked above, the manufacturer is CoSeedBioPharm Co. After searching in all the wrong places (thanks english-korean language barrier), I finally landed at their site.
They have a lot of certifications, but nothing mentioning 'snail' or 'cruelty free'. But I also couldn't confirm whether Korea has it's own version of Cruelty Free certification, Doesn't look like they do, but I'm not a 100% sure.
I also found their product listings, but other INCI name and Product use, everything else is a korean image embed. Link if you'd like to try your luck. Also found this video (lol @ music). But the video showed me, that somewhere out there english data sheets existed, And I found it.
There are only 4 types of snail mucin listed in the data sheet, while their site has 8, with 1 repeat (maybe a sub variant). But we're going to have to make do. The data sheets contain efficacy studies and Two of snail ingredients mention clinical patch test results. So I'm starting to think they don't test on animals?? But the sheet doesn't mention any exact extraction procedures.
Also according to this video, Coseed supplies to
Go through the video to know exactly what products, use ingredients supplied by them.

I also found, their list of patents in Korea (they have 76 patents btw & 93 results in google patents), with the following relating to snail.
[Note: all of this is korean, and I'm using google translate. Unfortunately years of binge-watching k-dramas has not held me in good stead, so who the hell knows exactly what they meant by snail fire bag]
I looked up, the patents and after a few false starts found some of them in English!!!, adding those links above.
Also found a few more snail related patents held by coseed in English.

Below are excerpts from patents that I found most relevant to the cruelty-free debate.
Snail feed with red ginseng and Centella asiatica and breeding method, in particular goes into raising a snail from eggs to adult, with details on what to feed, at what frequency, for how long and feed changes at different stages, how many snails must be left in a single breeding tank, requirements of the breeding tank, also provides experimental examples of survival rates based on different types of feed and breeding methods.
" the survival rate of the snails fed with the feed containing red ginseng and cinnabar seedlings of Example 1 was 98.10% on average, which was higher than that of the snails of the Comparative Examples 1 to 3. In addition, the survival rates of the snail feed of Comparative Example 1 and the snail feed of Comparative Example 2 were 88.3% and 87.9%, respectively, which was higher than the survival rate of the conventional snail feed, Comparative Example 3, of 82.1%."
" the survival rate of the snail of Example 2, which was supplied with clean environment and fresh feed, was 98.2%, which was 20.5% higher than that of the conventional snail snail survival rate of 77.7% Respectively."
The point being even if they're not raising snails in an optimum environment out of the goodness of their hearts, they doing so to increase survival rates and thereby, more mucin = more profit.

Cosmetic Composition containing red ginseng fed snail mucus already linked above.
" Republic of Korea Patent Publication No. 10-1995-0002741 (1995. 02. 16) relates to a method for manufacturing cosmetics using mucin components extracted from a snail, snail was washed in clean water snail by immersing in hot water containing salt After removing the impurities contained in the snail, the liquid mucin component is collected from the snail, and the collected mucin component is heated to evaporate moisture, thereby extracting the pure mucin component and extracting the extracted mucin component from the basic raw material in the cosmetic manufacturing process. Cosmetics prepared by mixing in the mixing process "is described."
That sounds painful. But it was a method previously patented in 1995. Also it's only about how snail was cleaned, nothing about how EXACTLY mucin is collected.
This is a 2012 patent that mentions "For a period of time, the snails, which had eaten red ginseng, were washed in running water, and only similar sizes (6 ~ 8cm) were selected, sterilized thoroughly with 70% ethanol, and weighed to obtain accurate mucus.
The snail was put into a black net and collected for 6 hours, and then fed again. After giving a 12-hour recovery period, the slime was collected in the same manner as above, and the collected slime was stored refrigerated."
That doesn't sound quite as painful.
Stalking cosrx Instagram, I found this. Leaving aside, the fairy taleish telling, the story seems to match.
So I'm going with cosrx is as cruelty-free as can be without taking into consideration the ethics of growing snails in cages, that's whole other debate, that you need to make up your minds on, for yourself.

But, what about generally? Can we assume all Snail Secretion Filtrate is cruelty-free?

I tried to check, but Snail secretion gave 8988 results and snail extraction gave 28759 results in google patents. And man I'm so not going through all of them.
But I did go through a few that prima facie looked relevant.
From Method for manufacturing snail secretion filtrate and cosmetic including the snail secretion filtrate [2017]
" The step of washing the snails comprises washing the snails using 5% of brine, washing the snails with the mixture of 5% of brine and 1% of vinegar, (B) washing the snail, and (c) washing the snail washed in the step (b) using purified water. Wherein the step (b) includes immersing the snail in the mixture for at least 30 seconds and then repeating the salvage at least four times. The step of scraping the washed snail may cut the washed snail to a size of at least 0.1 mm*."*
This is a korean patent and I would give it the benefit of the doubt for some translation error, if it wasn't repeated once more and if the following claim wasn't there.
"Washing the snail with water; Slicing the washed snail; Extracting a snail extract using a snail; Filtering the extracted snail extract; And And concentrating the filtered snail extract to produce a concentrated snail extract."
I don't even know what to make out of this patent.

From **Method for increasing snail mucus production and extracting the same [2016], Taiwanese patent
" In view of this, the present invention provides a method for promoting mucus secretion of snails with a slight physical stimulation and short stimulation time; the method is to stimulate the secretion of mucus by living snails with a preset voltage*, and the snail after the* electrical stimulation is still a living snail. . In other words, the extraction of snail mucus using the method provided by the present invention does not cause snail death."

From For bio-pharmaceuticals or the snail mucus extraction element of cosmetics [2019] Chinese patent
"Due to slow in one's movements in snail crawling process, the amount of snail pituitary extract is less, is such as acquired using nature Method, be necessarily unable to get a large amount of snail pituitary extract.
The utility model provides a kind of for bio-pharmaceuticals or the snail mucus extraction element of cosmetics, belongs to field of biotechnology. It includes tubular extraction cylinder, one is equipped in the extraction cylinder, and the crawl frame creeped is tilted upward for snail, the crawl frame includes platform of creeping, and connect the plate of creeping for platform of creeping, the plate of creeping has several and along the circumferentially-spaced uniform setting of axial line for platform of creeping, the angle creeped between plate and horizontal plane is at an acute angle, and cylinder bottom is extracted in plate one end connection of creeping, and the other end connects the upper surface for platform of creeping. The utility model can be improved mucous secretion of the snail in crawling process, to improve the extraction efficiency of snail mucus."
So three more methods exist that are prima facie, two cruel and one that may not be.

Also found more ways of extraction on youtube, this Video uses ozone for extraction and this patent that may be somewhat related says it doesn't stress the snails. It infact says "The extraction steps comprises the use of natural substances that do not affect the health of the snail and that actually revitalize its physiological well-being."
This video by a manufacturer **claims to not harm snail either, but it looks cruel...
Obviously I've not gone through or figured out every single snail filtrate extraction method there is in the world but at this point having gone through the few that I have, I'd say cruelty free status depends on suppliers. And even if the supplier claims that the snails are not harmed, there is a grey area where we don't know if they are stressed.

Edit: u/NeverKeepCalm had linked this video in the comments, where the manufacturer claims to spray a secret spray that pleasures them to the point where they secrete a lot of slime, in a special machine he calls spa for snails.

Final thoughts

2020.09.25 20:59 ThreeCommasClub ThreeCommasClub Hosts a Local Event in Manchester North

ThreeCommas is hosting a Meet Your MP Event in Manchester North.
“Thank you everyone for coming out tonight. I know everyone has busy schedules and I will strive to answer every single question you may have tonight. As your MP I have been continuing to work for the people and as Education Secretary, I have focused on how we can reform schooling and provide more opportunities and secure better outcomes for our kids. Our children deserve a world-class education and it is my department’s mission no matter a student's background, financial status, or geographic location that they have access to a quality education. With that, it’s time for your questions!”
A man asks “Last election you promised the LPUK would fight for more affordable housing, what have you done on that front?”
“That’s a great question. I know that affordable housing is a huge concern in Manchester. We have housing prices that are out of control and we need action. While Labour and the opposition continue to fumble on housing this government has actually taken steps to make housing more affordable. My libertarian colleague at the Housing Department has announced plans for Green Belt Reform. Restrictions on green belt land is a huge reason why we have such expensive prices in the first place. By strategically releasing such land we will open more land for affordable housing projects and lower prices overall.”
A woman asks “As education secretary, what are you doing to improve education for my children?”
“It’s an honor to be serving as education secretary. One of the first things I plan to unveil is legislation designed to overturn the impending plan on grammar schools. I believe that ban was ill-conceived and only hurt students. By getting rid of that ban we will return school choice into the hands of students and parents. Moreover, it’s not just removing the ban we also plan on other major reforms. We will set up a commission to identify where we need grammar schools the most and support new schools in those areas. This will make sure all communities are uplifted together and no student is left behind. Of course, we will also have a 50 million pound fund to help support schools transition in underserved areas as well.”
A man asks “A key reason I voted for you over Labour is because they don’t have the international credibility to negotiate trade deals or deal with China. How is this government acting on foreign policy?”
“On foreign policy, I’m happy to report we have Seimer a good friend and Libertarian colleague as Foreign Secretary. I know he is working around the clock to guide our foreign policy responsibly and working to defend human rights. For one he just recently announced sanctions on senior members of the oppressive regime in Belarus. The illegitimate government there has undermined elections, tried to suppress protests, and acted with total disregard for human rights. I’m happy to report that the Foreign Office is taking action to combat such violations of basic human standards.”
“On China, this government is taking a strong stance. It’s part of the reason why we plan to raise defense funding by 11 billion pounds. We also support in the strongest possible terms the people in Hong Kong and oppose the treatment of Uyghur Muslims in China.”
ThreeCommas answered a few more questions and ended the event.

2020.09.25 18:11 DiscombobulatedPage3 Starting my first homelab (with a Dell R720xd) and I have some basic questions about buying parts and the like

After being interested for a long time, I finally broke down and got an R720xd (I posted on homelabsales last week) and have been learning a lot already. While I'm not in a rush to buy anything new for a server I haven't really started doing anything with, I have a few general questions:
  1. Is there a strong reason to buy only Dell brand server parts? I've heard that if you insert 3rd party cards the fans will go to 100% because the server can't talk to them properly (and that the fans can be manually adjusted via IPMI). However, does that apply to things like hard drives, too? I fully appreciate that server hardware is more expensive because it operates in a different environment than home use hardware, but I would like to figure out where I can save money and where I can't. (For example, I have some SATA hard drives from various desktops and laptops already, and of course big consumer hard drives can be had for cheap.)
  2. Is it generally okay to buy new parts shipped from China/Hong Kong off eBay? I can imagine that there are counterfeit products and the like, and that if I were a business it'd be best to by direct from Dell. But as a homelab person, is this generally okay if I do a bit of due diligence and check the seller ratings and the like? (I'm looking to get the flex bay 2.5" drive backplane kit, and maybe a hard drive based on the answer to #1.)
  3. Is it generally okay to buy used/working pull parts off eBay? Is this more or less safe than new parts from China? Is there a substantive difference if it's "refurbished" by a company or an individual? Are there some parts types this better for than others? (E.g., should I avoid used hard drives or anything?)
  4. Do homelab folks tend to standardize on one brand (per type of equipment)? That is, I now have a Dell server. Would it be desirable to generally try stick with Dell equipment for other servers rather than, say, assembling a mishmash of Dell, HP, Sun, etc.? I can imagine that moving parts around within a single brand lab is probably easier. Or does it really not tend to matter in the end? (And of course, for personal use, price and availability is a huge consideration.)
I hope these are reasonable questions to be having and I'm not really showing my ignorance or anything. Also, my career isn't in IT/computers, so anything else that you think I should have asked here I would appreciate answers to. :-) Thanks!

2020.09.24 21:07 Startropic1 The Megalist

Here is our comprehensive list of every single mecha anime (and some Tokusatsu) series, OVA, & movie ever made:
Important note about Korean works: Korean animation developed a bit late, and Japanese anime had been banned in Korea up until the late 1980s. Due to this fact, combined with the art form being in its infancy in Korea, many older Korean works were blatant knockoffs of Japanese works. These works also typically received extremely poor quality translations if they were translated at all. By the late 1990s Korean animation had finally established its footing and put out better quality and more original content. The best example of this known to english speaking regions is Iron Kid, known as Eon Kid in english. We encourage the embrace of more modern Korean animation, but take heed of this history when exploring the Korean works of old.
Other terms:
Hentai - This is the term for pornographic anime. While it is extremely rare for a hentai title to be released in the mecha genre, such titles do exist. In the interest of completion we have included these select few titles in the megalist, but they are appropriately noted as such. Viewers be advised.
HK Subs - Subtitled in english by english speaking regions in Asia, usually Hong Kong. These are typically lower quality due to the translators not being native english speakers or in some cases limited knowledge of english. The worst cases of these are found on bootleg DVDs which are very prevalent in some Asian countries outside of Japan.
HK Dub - On some occasions anime was dubbed in english in english speaking regions of Asia. These usually suffer the same problems as HK subs. The most infamous example is the english dub of Transformers Headmasters and Victory.
Fansub - Fan subs are usually good quality subs created by fans for anime that has never received an official license for release in the english speaking western world. A very large portion of the megalist is unlicensed, particularly anime from the 1980s or older. If an anime does get licensed, its fansubbing project will be halted. Official licenses is the universal goal for all the anime we cover.

2020.09.24 10:18 GoldenKing4 Single Player Games I've Completed in 2020

I recently saw u/Thank_You_Love_You 's post on the games they completed, and since I've been keeping track of mine as well, I thought to make a similar post. I'll try to order the games by date played with the most recent games being last. I'll give a score based on how much I liked it and hours played. All of these games were played on PC. Anyway, let's get started!

Bioshock 1 (not remastered) - 16.6 hours - 8.5/10

The atmosphere is amazing, the characters were all distinct, the old-time music fitted really well and was quite catchy, and above all, the ending blew me away. Rapture really sucks you in and although sometimes I would be getting burned out, I still loved exploring and using all of the powers and guns to find what best fit me.

Assassin's Creed: Director's Cut - 21.5 hours - 5.5/10

The game was alright. Kinda clunky which I didn't mind, but all of the missions were the same, and I kept high-profile killing thinking I couldn't low-profile kill with the hidden blade. Made for some fun rooftop kills using the throwing knife though.

Doom 3 (not BFG Edition) - 13.2 hours - 7/10

Pretty good game. Slow-paced, using the flashlight made it feel more like a horror game. The story was kinda meh, but overall not a bad game. BFG still is a BFG. Didn't play the DLC, but looks about the same as the game.

Barkour - <5 hours - 9.5/10

Saw this game on Twitter and got it instantly. It's an indie game on Itch where you're a platforming dog that uses his bark to jump and gain speed and flip around. Really fun, doesn't take long to complete, but totally worth checking out.

Tomb Raider Gold - 17 hours - 7/10

I played through the Legend Trilogy before playing this game. Quite good once you get used to the controls. Ended up playing this using the Numpad, which worked pretty well. The only hard section for me was the doppelganger part, but other than that, challenging game. Lots of tricky sections too. I want to finish all of the classic Tomb Raider games, but this one was quite taxing on motivation.

Spyro 1 Reignited - 10.5 hours - 6/10

This game was a really straightforward, quite easy game. I want to finish the trilogy sometime but haven't felt the need to continue it just yet. Looks really good visually and controls nicely.

Beyond Good and Evil - 12.1 hours - 9/10

Really enjoyed this game! Loved the camera mechanic, areas, side content, and the characters. If you decide to play this, make two save files before you get to the last mission. There is a bug that soft-locks the game meaning you can no longer progress and have to start from your last save. The bug seems to be on-going even after reloading sometimes.

Epic Battle Fantasy 3 - 13.8 hours - 8/10

Played this game as a kid, still holds up quite well. It aims to make fun of JRPG's while also being a good JRPG itself. Pretty challenging game with secrets and lots of gear. Started as a flash game but now has a fourth and fifth installment, which further improves to the mechanics and replayability.

Tomb Raider (2013) - 19.4 hours - 7.5/10

A nice reboot of the series, but wish it had more tombs to raid. Enjoyable game and I hear the squeals are even better. Very cinematic like the Uncharted series.

HuniePop - 27 hours - 10/10

I know I know, but it really is a great game. You play it for the innovative match 3 gameplay (more in-depth than you think) but stick around for the other part of the game. Great artwork, great voice acting, great lip-syncing, great story, great music, great everything.

Watch_Dogs 1 - 45 hours, 8.5/10

People are still playing this game to this day. One of the best parts of the game is when you get invaded by other players in the middle of your single-player playthrough. It's refreshing to see something like this that fits in so well with hacking everything around you. Still looks great and you can mod it to look like it would have looked during the E3 event (you know the one). The story is good, the gameplay is good, DLC is not bad but look up some reviews before buying.

GTA III - 29 hours - 7.5/10

If you can get around the graphics and the controls, then it's still a great game to play in 2020. I haven't done a full playthrough until now. I mostly played for a bit and then moved on, but after completing GTA IV, I wanted to go back and finish the older ones. The game can provide some hilarious gaming moments, as well as some frustrating ones. If you're doing the car delivery missions, don't forget about Mr. Whoopee!

LostWinds - 2 hours - 7/10

A fairly short 2D platformer with interesting mechanics using the wind. Port of a mobile game, but fits well for PC. There is a squeal too, but I haven't played it yet.

Va-11 Hall-A: Cyberpunk Bartender Action - 21 hours - 11/10

This is probably the best game I've played all year. I've never played a visual novel before, but I was not at all disappointed. Characters and story are amazingly well crafted, you get to be a cyberpunk bartender in a "booze 'em up", what more could you want! The music is to die for, every song is a joy to listen to. The atmosphere is super fun and cozy. You can get lost in the world for hours without realizing it. If you play any game this year, check this one out!

Castle of Illusion starring Mickey Mouse - 4 hours - 6/10

Alright 2D/3D platformer, pretty short, even to 100%. If you like Disney, then you'll like this game.

Dungeon Siege 1 - 36.4 hours - 8/10

I had a lot of fun with this game. Although old, it still holds up with lots of loot, secrets, party members, combat, and pack mules. Didn't really micro-manage my party, but it was still fun to playthrough. Oh, and no loading screens! Recommend patching it with the Legends of Aranna + extras if you get it on Steam.

Toybox Turbos - 4 hours - 6/10

I remembered it was on mobile so I went looking for it and found it on Steam. Fun top-down racing game, multiplayer is dead, but with friends it can be a lot of fun.

XIII Classic - 9.5 hours - 8/10

Fun, linear FPS with an art style that makes up for the rest. Cel Shaded graphics makes this game stand out. Comicbook-style headshot kills are also really satisfying. Nice ending, but don't want to spoil it. The game's also getting remastered in November of this year.

Ninja Pizza Girl - 9.5 hours - 7.5/10

A 2D platformer about delivering pizzas, bullying, self-esteem, and resilience. Made by a husband and wife team with help from their daughters. Fun platforming with trampolines, long jumps, and high falls. The less you mess up, the faster you go. Has audio logs in the game explaining how the game was made which is really neat.

Bloodrayne 1 - 8.5 hours - 7/10

Really weird vampire game from the early 2000s. Still pretty fun to whip out the huge blades on your arms and chop up some zombies and military personnel. You can also jump on people and suck their blood to regain health while using them as human shields. Story was meh, but the gameplay makes up for it.

Max Payne 3 - 12 hours - 6.5/10

I really wanted this to be like the older games, but I was surprised to find it enjoyable. Very cinematic with lots of cutscenes, fun-ish gunplay with a pretty good story. Watched a video by Raycevick and he made me change my perspective on this game to be a little more positive after playing.

Just Deserts - 14.5 hours - 5/10

This game is nowhere close to HuniePop, but it wasn't too bad. The story was meh with some of the writing and voice-acting being the same. The gameplay is repetitive and you have to get lucky for big money early on if you want the best weapon. Came out with DLC recently.

Chariot - 21.3 hours - 6.5/10

Interesting co-op 2D platformer that is a lot more fun playing with another person. You guide a chariot on wheels across the lands, helping the king look for his final resting place. I played it by myself and it was still fun, but the gameplay tired me out after a while. Gets really challenging at the end, but if you're only going to play this game for a bit, the first world is amazing.

Jet Set Radio - 18.5 hours - 10/10, but I want to give it 11/10

What can I say, but DJ Professor K knows how to throw down some beats! Gameplay consists of grinding rails, spraying graffiti, and outrunning the cops as they use more and more ridiculous amounts of force to try and stop you. Super fun game with more Cel shaded graphics, an incredible soundtrack that I continue to listen to well after playing the game. I ended up using the keyboard instead of a controller, but because of how the game works, it's good with either. The only downside is you can't replay levels or manual save, but after completing the game, you can play in the connected version of each district. Lots of characters to unlock with some challenging ones to unlock too. Highly recommend.

Fable 1 and Fable: The Lost Chapters (not anniversary edition) - 19.5 hours - 7.5/10

Didn't explore much of the marriage options, houses appearing on the market out of "nowhere", or just being mischievous, but it was an enjoyable playthrough. I liked the music a lot, a good amount of side content, and a fun story. Really cool character customization with tattoos and hairstyles that you can find around the world. Also a cool class system, but using Will seems the most fun to try. If I play this again, I will go full-on evil, doing only evil things.

Coffee Talk - 9 hours - 7/10

Very much inspired by Va-11 Hall-A, it's a visual novel about owning a coffee shop that is only open at night. You meet a wide range of characters, some of which are orcs, werewolves, vampires, and aliens. A good story with a latte art system where you can make your own art on certain drinks before serving. Combining ingredients will make different drinks, some secret, some not. The characters will tell you what they want, but you'll have to guess sometimes.

Sleeping Dogs - 36 hours - 10/10

Incredible open-world game set in Hong Kong, where you're an undercover cop, but also get more and more involved with the Sun On Yee gang. Great story, fun driving, you can stuff people in trunks of cars, skill tree for both the police and gangs, and great music. I found myself sitting in my car listening to the classical music station for a while, then driving off and ramming bikes to the music. The traffic laws messed me up for a good hour since they drive on the other side of the road. Side content is vast, but not boring. You can have girlfriends for one date and after the date, they will reveal all of one specific collectible on the map. Collectibles have incentives for you to get them, it's just an all-around, well-designed game. DLC is repetitive, short, but adds new mechanics.

NiGHTS Into Dreams - 8 hours - 9/10

Another amazing SEGA game. It's a game about dreams with fun, easy to learn hard to master gameplay. You fly around to 2D collecting blue chips to give to the Ideya Capture. once you do that a couple of times there is a boss fight, which each boss being very different from one another. It confused me at the start about what was going on and what I had to do. Looked at the manual and it helped a lot. Also watching videos helps too if you get stuck or confused. Highly recommend and it doesn't take long to complete or 100%, just patience.

Sonic and SEGA All-Stars Racing - 8 hours - 6/10

I hear Transformed is much much better, but I wanted to play the first one anyways. Kinda grind-heavy for "miles" near the end if you want everything. Quick racing game, kinda repetitive, but not bad.

Hitman: Codename 47 - 14 hours - 6/10

The first Hitman game in the series. Very clunky, alright AI, but some levels are so good they shouldn't belong in that game. The hotel level is by far the best. Saving only occurs after missions, and you can't save in the middle of one. I didn't really get hooked on the story. Found myself frustrated more often than not. Probably not worth playing, but you can give it a go for yourself.

Thank you for reading my long post. It was a lot of fun looking back on the games I've played this year, and maybe I can post more about it in the future. Stay patient!

2020.09.24 06:14 roadtofreedom90 How could we use Aspergers to our advantage?

I am an Aspie girl from Hong Kong, been wanting to move to more ideal places for Aspie to live in (so primary goal now is financial freedom) - but in order to do that - I need to be strong on my own feet - ideally I would like to work without having to be stuck in one geographical locations (so that I can choose what environment I can be in) or having to deal with people regularly (I hate having to meet expectations of people daily)
I am a Math tutor for now (I don’t mind math theory, but I don’t like having to deal with people every single day- it still brings me stress because I am still fear that I cannot meet their expectations ) although till now - I seem to be trusted by my clients - but I really can’t tell and I don’t want to be stuck with a job that I need to meet peoples expectations everyday
I have saved up some cash (170k) so I want to start investing - likely real estate - and I feel happy to see nice spaces because I am so deprived of in HK - outside of Hong Kong - but I am so scared that I would get scammed or screwed because of lies or hideous behaviours from people - I know that outside world is dangerous and I have been in some dangerous situations before - and I feel that I am still quite naive or simple-minded to be out there in this world - but I am so tempted to move to next stage...particularly in this time of uncertainty I feel that there are likely more opportunities
I am really concerned about being scammed by anyone because the 170k I have sold my time for the past couple of years - it is so damn important to me because I don’t want to go back in life again starting over - the thought of wasting my past years for being scammed is so scary to me - I have worked so hard to try to redeem my own life/ time as soon as I can
So question here:
How could we use autism/ Aspergers to our advantage, instead of disadvantages? Or how was your experience so far if you felt that Aspergers have worked for you, not against
Would love to hear some sharing!

2020.09.23 15:10 05manuel44 Film Canons Are Parochial and Obsolete: A Tirade

I’ve never had any use for the established canonical lists. I started watching interesting movies back in 2010, when I was 17, having chanced upon the arthouse section of my local Blockbuster (of all places!), where I rented Mulholland Drive, Haneke and Godard films, etc. And nowadays I mainly rely on compilation lists by my favorite Mubi and Letterboxd users, which is the best way to go about finding new movies: find someone who shares my predilections but has seen and liked films that I haven’t, and check out their lists.
Only recently did I start looking in detail at the famous lists: TSPDT, BFI, Rosenbaum’s, and a couple of others. But I gotta say that it’s been very disappointing; all these famous canons suffer from what can only be termed an Old White Anglo-Saxon bias.
Take the supreme canon: the BFI critic’s list. There are no films from the last 40 years in the top 20; can we take that seriously? Obviously it’s possible that the Golden Age of the Cinema is over (all art forms have highs and lows), but this suggests that the cinema was considerably better before 1980, which is not something that most people of my generation who watch so many movies will accept.
The last 40 years has seen a golden age for Argentine, Colombian, Hungarian, Iranian, Taiwanese, Chinese, Hong-Kongese, South Korean, Filipino, and Thailandese cinema and an arguable decline in American and Western European cinema (the Anglo favorites). In fact the list slyly admits to this: the highest rated movie from the last 40 years is from Hong Kong.
Another irregularity is that some directors are vastly overrated in comparison to other directors from the same country. Satyajit Ray was almost certainly India’s greatest director: and the TSPDT top 250 directors list awards him 42nd place. Which is very nice of them, but then I see that Benegal and Sen are nowhere to be found. All three of these are in the top 5 or 6 in Indian cinema history according to most people I know who have extensive experience with Indian cinema, and yet one flourishes whereas the others can’t even beat out Sofia Coppola - this shows a lack of depth.
Even worse are the poor South Koreans: I can’t find a single director who makes the top 250, even though their cinema has been going strong since the 1960s. A clear sign of ignorance or perhaps lack of curiosity on the part of the voters. I am of course not saying that South Korea should have as many filmmakers as say France or Italy, but having zero is plain stupid.
And then there’s Rosenbaum. I’ve chosen to mention his list because it’s quite famous and because he always stood as an American champion of innovative and foreign art films, in contrast to the conservative and commercial preferences of his more famous Chicago-based colleague Roger Ebert (who dismissed Tarkovsky and Kiarostami, and underrated the more radical commercial filmmakers of his generation like Lynch and Kubrick).
His list also falls apart upon inspection. Minelli and Nicholas Ray were both wonderful directors, no doubt. But what are we to make of the fact that they each get 10 films, whereas Bergman, Tarkovsky and Fellini have only nine in total? Minelli is three times the director that Bergman was? Very silly. In fact, neither Ray or Minelli are really “first-tier” Classic Hollywood directors; that honor seems to belong to Chaplin, Hitchcock, Ford, Hawks and Welles. And as usual cinema from outside the USA and Western Europe is hard to find; but even Germany gets kinda shafted - two films from Herzog and Fassbinder each. Jarmusch has four films - is he as good as Herzog and Fassbinder put together?
Now, it’s not like I really give a damn or that I think there’s anything surprising about these results. They’re to be expected if one looks at the votes. The statistics show: more than 50% of 2012 BFI voters were over the age of 60 and more than 50% were from the English-speaking world (Britain and the USA alone make up almost 50% of the critic’s poll). And Western European critics outnumber Asian ones. And the TSPDT list is even worse since it has all these issues but also considers some very old lists - going as far back as the 1952 BFI poll. I’m also not really pointing fingers - so obviously the BFI is very Anglo-centric since it is based in Britain.
And I think there’s a simple explanation for these results. Plenty of critics didn’t have access in the old days to the whole world of cinema that is at our fingertips today. That was certainly true of Rosenbaum back when he made his list in 2004. Nor can critics give “objective judgements” - women are more likely to prefer movies by women, Japanese more likely to vote for Japanese movies and so on. And we tend to form our strongest impressions and memories when we are between the ages of 15 and 25, like my grandparents who still prefer music from the 40s and 50s to the new stuff - that explains the old-movie bias.
What I do give a damn about is that these lists have acquired way too much clout here and elsewhere, sometimes to a bizarre extent. Some have decided to only watch movies from their chosen list before moving on - since it’s an “objective” canon put together by the smart guys; using these lists only makes sense to me if you’re a novice or a completist. Even more oddly, some people were very giddy that Vertigo beat out Citizen Kane - finally, their favorite movie was validated against Citizen Kane’s 50-year-old tyranny! (yawn).
As for me, I’ll just continue strolling my way through Mubi lists compiled by anonymous ciphers - some of whom I'll admit are total nerds. I think I’ll get more out of it. Anybody join me?

2020.09.23 06:01 IamHighElf Facebook has shut down several inauthentic Facebook accounts and pages

https://public-assets.graphika.com/reports/graphika_report_naval_gazing.pdf
Facebook Takes Down Inauthentic Chinese Network
On September 22, 2020, Facebook announced that it had taken down a cluster of fake assets on Facebook and Instagram that it attributed to individuals in China. The assets posted about a range of issues in Chinese, English, Filipino, and Indonesian, including a small volume of content on the U.S. 2020 election, but they showed a particular interest in maritime security, especially in the South China Sea. For this reason, we have dubbed this activity Operation Naval Gazing.
This is the second time that Facebook has attributed a takedown set to actors in China. In August 2019, the platform took down seven pages, three groups, and five accounts that mainly posted about the Hong Kong protests from a pro-China point of view; Facebook attributed that activity to “individuals associated with the Chinese government.” The latest takedown was larger and wider ranging, but it, too, primarily posted about regional issues from a pro-China perspective.
Before the takedown, Facebook shared a list of assets with Graphika for independent analysis.
Operation Naval Gazing enlarges our understanding of information operations emanating from China. Some of its content reflected Chinese messaging, both overt and covert, on issues such as the Hong Kong protests, Taiwan’s independence, and COVID-19. Other content promoted China’s position in its geopolitical rivalry with the United States, especially in the South China Sea. The operation’s use of covert assets to promote favored politicians - notably members of the Duterte family in the Philippines, and President Joko Widodo (“Jokowi”) in Indonesia - appears more novel. Its use of fake American accounts was also novel, but these assets were generally too rudimentary to establish a persona.
The operation began in late 2016 by posting about Taiwan; some of its posts attacked President Tsai Ing-Wen. In early 2018, it started posting about the Philippines with content that supported President Rodrigo Duterte and argued in favor of Chinese regional influence. Around the same time, it also created a collection of pages that focused more broadly on the South China Sea and defended China’s policies there. For a few months in late 2018, one page began posting in support of President Joko Widodo in Indonesia, shortly before Indonesia’s presidential election.
In 2019-2020, the operation began running accounts that posed as Americans and posted a small amount of content about the U.S. presidential election. Different assets supported President Donald Trump and his rival Joe Biden; one short-lived group supported former presidential candidate Pete Buttigieg. The operation did not single out either candidate for preferential treatment. Many of the accounts in this phase of the operation were barely active.
Throughout all of these phases, the operation kept returning to the theme of maritime security, especially the achievements of the Chinese Navy.
The operation used a number of techniques to disguise its fake accounts. Some stole their profile pictures from authentic individuals. Others used AI-generated profile pictures, a technique that is becoming increasingly prevalent in information operations around the world. The operation typically set up its accounts in small batches spread out over a few days and linked by stylistic features, such as the choice of profile picture or the location that they claimed. None of the accounts made large numbers of friends on Facebook.
The operation’s success in audience building was mixed. Two pages that focused on the Philippines attracted around 57,000 and 40,000 followers, respectively. A page that mainly posted about security in the South China Sea attracted 16,000. None of the other pages had more than 10,000 followers, and one, focused on criticizing Donald Trump, had none at all. Similarly, a group focused on the Philippines had over 51,000 members, but none of the operation’s other groups had more than 2,000, and the one dedicated to Buttigieg had only two - both run by the operation.
Naval Gazing showed little cross-platform activity. In addition to the assets on its own platform, Facebook found six Instagram accounts, four of which never posted. Graphika found one related high-confidence asset on Twitter and a handful of accounts on Chinese platforms. The operation did post its content in front of various different audiences, but it does not appear to have broken out of social media to be picked up by the mainstream media or other influencers.

2020.09.22 09:52 scipio05 Filament dehydrator scams?

Posting here since this seems a bit too good to be true and didn't want to waste my money. Are filament dehydrator scams common or are you guys aware of any in the past? Someone posted about an upcoming kickstarter campaign in one of the 3d printing groups I'm in for a dual spool digital dehydrator for around $40 that heats up to 70C. Company is unheard of in Hong Kong and all they have is a simple website and promo video with what seems to be a functional prototype. The only reason I'm posting is because I know Sunlu recently had their own campaign selling their single spool dehydrator for a bit under $50 so it isn't out of the realm of possibility, but figured you guys would know. (not posting link or name of company in case it's against the rules)

2020.09.22 06:48 DoubleCheesecake7 A Timeline of Moonlight Roller Drops and Shipping Info.

There's been a lot of discussion surrounding Moonlight Roller the past couple of days with shipping times, social media management, and transparency. I'm going to try to not share my opinion in this post and attempt to make an objective list that people could draw their own conclusions on how they feel about the company in the current circumstances.
This is not an anti-moonlight post, nor is it comparing it to moxi skates.
It's a timeline I was able to put together mostly from their instagram page includes posts, comments, and replies. If I am missing any information, please fill in the comments below, but this is directly what I see that's currently on IG right now, as they don't seem to send out reliable emails to every customer or dm's lately, and have a long history of not saving frequent lives.

Whew, sorry this was so long guys.
I really just tried to make a complete timeline. I think I got almost everything, but I do not know when they finally sold internationally, or if they honored the $209 presale price tag for this order as previously stated. I also do not know how people got the origional August 15h as a safety dance ship time because it wasnt listed anywhere that I could find besides customers in comments.
Since they only have two lives saved on their instagram right now, I wasn't able to add anything mentioned in those. Feel free to add below.
I did not include any information on the quality control issues because they weren't mentioned anywhere on their instagram or website. The only things I saw were people commenting on ig about build issues in facebook groups. I felt like it also is hard to be unbiased when posting about quality as it's more subjective to the person who received the skates.
Does anybody know where their Safety Dance shipment is?
Please are sharing their instagram DM's with moonlight on Facebook about safety dance. They are being delivered in this shipment stuck in Los Angeles, not being checked for quality control at their warehouse since August as their previous updates have heavily implied.
EDIT: I am seeing comments that people have not received their skates from the May 15th drop that supposedly shipped on July 27th. Could anybody dealing with this come forward so we can add for transparency? *a user on here said they had been shipped my moonlight and lost on UPS's end.
Here is the bit of live I could catch earlier today

2020.09.22 04:27 mrquaid Looking for recommendations to replace Revoshift shifters

I bought a lightly used Diamondback Lustre with 3x7 Shimano Revoshift grip shifts.
As I have learned firsthand, and read in plenty threads, Revoshifts are really difficult for not-so-strong kid hands.
There doesn't seem to be much to do fix them. I have cleaned and lubed the cable and housing and made sure all was working well. It is just a matter of having the hand strength to outpull the spring in the derailleur.
So I am ok replacing them. But I'd like leave the existing brake levers and just swap shifters, while also maintaining compatibility as much as possible and not spend a lot of money.
Options I've read about:
I really don't want to adapt a set of 3x8, but can't find a lot of basic level 3x7 shimano.
Can anyone recommend something that will work well with the rear Tourney MF-TZ21?
Should I try the SRAM twist? Anyone have recent firsthand info that they actually require less force? They are pretty cheap ($20 at REI)
Sorry if this thread is old ground, but the older options seem to have changed. Maybe the newer twist shifters are better?
BTW - I learn a lot in this sub, thanks!

2020.09.22 04:11 hughmcf [DIPLOMACY] Hong Kong Humanitarian Expatriation Program

Fresh on the heels of the British Government’s announcement that London will extend an offer of citizenship to millions of Hongkongers, Australian and British diplomats have issued a joint statement heralding a new multilateral initiative known as the Hong Kong Humanitarian Expatriation Program (HKHEP). Building off of London’s original citizenship plan, the HKHEP will see Australia and the United Kingdom jointly coordinate the mass expatriation of Hongkongers, with provisions in place for cooperation on logistics, diplomatic action and bureaucratic management.
With Australia and the United Kingdom having settled on the broad principles of the plan, it is now time to finalise the specific outline of the HKHEP. This includes the number of Hongkongers Australia will accept, the specifics of logistical cooperation and the contours of any joint Anglo-Australian diplomatic action. It also includes the potential participation of Canada, New Zealand and the United States in the program. With that in mind, Australia shall put the following sections to discussion.

Point one - Humanitarian intake size:

Relieving the United Kingdom’s citizenship burden:
For its part, Australia commits to accept 25,000 Hongkongers as part of a special humanitarian intake program to be known as the ‘2021 Hong Kong Special Humanitarian Intake’. Individuals accepted by Australia will be provided with permanent humanitarian visas, which include a path to eventual citizenship. Unlike the United Kingdom, which has undertaken to offer citizenship to all Hong Kong SAR citizens, Australia will only accept individuals who are British National (Overseas) (BNOs) and children of BNOs, in addition to any dependents. In practice, this means that Australia will assume part of the burden placed on the United Kingdom as a result of its pledge to welcome millions of Hongkongers. Australian assistance in this regard is important considering the fact that the British Government will likely be unable to accommodate as many people as it has undertaken to protect.
Should Canada, New Zealand and the United States join the HKHEP, it is recommended that they adopt Australia’s model and look to lessen the burden placed on the United Kingdom by opting to admit individuals who would otherwise be given British citizenship. In Australia’s case, this will involve Australian officials selecting individuals for its special humanitarian intake who first satisfy background checks conducted by British or Australian diplomatic staff and then satisfy criteria set by the Australian Government.
Additional Australian visa changes:
Finally, beyond the 25,000 places set aside as part of Australia’s special humanitarian intake, the Australian Government will also loosen restrictions on other visa categories for BNOs and children of BNOs, in addition to any dependents. This will allow those who miss out on permanent humanitarian visas but still wish to relocate to Australia to do so more easily via work, skills, student and partner visas. At present, it is difficult to predict how many Hongkongers will take advantage of these loosened restrictions.

Point two - Logistical and bureaucratic cooperation:

Covid-19 quarantining:
With respect to the coordination of Covid-19 quarantine procedures, Australia proposes a two-tiered isolation system. This will see the establishment of regional special quarantine facilities capable of hosting small to medium numbers of emergency expatriates, while the bulk of expatriates are processed through the standard quarantine infrastructure of each HKHEP participant as appropriate in each country. Allocation to special quarantine facilities will be reserved for those Hongkongers awarded asylum under the HKHEP who are judged to be in immediate need of protection and therefore must leave the SAR as quickly as possible. Assuming the United States joins the HKHEP, Australia proposes that regional special quarantine facilities are established at Guam, Christmas Island, Darwin, Hawaii and Diego Garcia. These facilities should be kept open to vulnerable expatriates accepted by any HKHEP participant state regardless of the territory on which the facility is located, with management and maintenance costs spread proportionally between participant states. This could, for example, see Hongkongers bound for Canada undergoing two weeks of quarantine on Guam, or expatriates bound for the UK self-isolating at Darwin.
Otherwise, for its part, Australia intends to process the remaining expatriates accepted as part of its special humanitarian intake over the course of 2021 at existing self-isolation hotels, with approximately 650 expatriates to be processed per fortnight. This will necessitate a waiting list, with some Hongkongers likely required to wait several months to receive asylum in Australia.
In order to reduce the burden on Australia’s quarantine infrastructure, the Federal Government will undertake to establish two new quarantine hotels in Sydney and Melbourne respectively, specifically to accommodate those arriving through the special humanitarian intake program.
Bureaucratic cooperation:
With separate consular groups all working towards processing the same pool of expatriation applicants, it is important that all bureaucratic processing is conducted in an organised and coordinated fashion. To that end, given the majority of the intake burden falls upon the United Kingdom, Australia proposes that application processing and background checks are coordinated by the British Consulate-General in Hong Kong (which is also the largest diplomatic facility in the SAR). [S] This will leave the British diplomatic service responsible for creating all necessary databases and software, although Australia proposes that British, American and Australian signals intelligence agencies work together to ensure that all such digital content is carefully encrypted (access will need to be strictly limited to trusted consular staff). [/S]
Miscellaneous cooperation:
Australia proposes that commercial flights are jointly chartered by participant states, with costs spread according to the number of expatriates accepted by each member.
Should member states identify any other areas of logistical and/or bureaucratic cooperation that have not been covered, they are encouraged to raise them as quickly as possible.

Point three - Diplomatic cooperation:

Although it will be difficult to predict exactly how the Chinese Government will react to the HKHEP, it is nonetheless important that all diplomatic cooperation is carefully planned ahead of time. Australia therefore makes its participation in the initiative contingent on a concrete agreement between all participating states that no single state will modify its current policies or practices in Hong Kong, or issue Hong Kong-related public statements of significance, without first consulting with the collective HKHEP membership. This will ensure that all participating states act as a united front if met with Chinese opposition.
