Pourquoi les magasins de produits de beauté noirs ne sont pas toujours détenus par des Noirs «Sur au moins 9 000 magasins spécialisés dans les soins des cheveux noirs et les cosmétiques aux États-Unis, 3 000 appartiennent à des Noirs», écrit Tobi Idowu pour Business of Fashion tenues de mariage pour femmes, citant une statistique d'un groupe de commerce appelé Black Owned Beauty Supply Association (BOBSA). Avec des pratiques systémiques d'exclusion - y compris un accès insuffisant au crédit et une discrimination ouverte - qui sont en place depuis des générations pour empêcher les propriétaires d'entreprise noirs de réussir, les entrepreneurs noirs ont été largement exclus du marché lucratif de la beauté noire. Certains experts estiment qu'une attention accrue, un changement de génération et "un nouvel examen minutieux de la manière dont les Noirs sont traités à tous les niveaux de l'industrie de la beauté" au milieu des manifestations pour les droits civiques peuvent signaler un tournant dans cette injustice entrepreneuriale. {Entreprise de mode}

2020.09.11 10:25 weab00 My experience spending (most of) my sophomore year of high school in France

I spent about 8 months of my sophomore year in France. I had to go back to the US mid-March because I risked not being let back in due to COVID-19, but still got to spend enough time to get a good idea of what the country is like. Anyway, I figured some people are curious about what it's like to live in France for an extended period of time as a foreigner. This is a very long read because there is a lot to cover, so strap in.
Background
I started researching foreign exchange programs freshman year of high school because I was interested in going abroad/becoming fluent in a foreign language. I'd already taken 4 years of French, so I decided to go to France through the Rotary program. I was placed in a small town in the south of France 20 miles from Toulouse.

Arriving

I went Logan->Amsterdam->Toulouse. I was greeted by the French Rotary Club members and driven to my first host family's house by the dad. Despite my confidence in my French, I found it hard to even get a sentence out. Getting to the house was extremely surreal since it was the amalgamation of many months of mentally preparing myself and undergoing Rotary training. I was extremely awkward at the bise and even accidentally kissed my older host brother's girlfriend on the cheek... whoops. I was going through so many different emotions: excitement, fear, exhilaration, anxiety, uncertainty, accomplishment.
A couple of things that culture-shocked me:

Lycée

The French schooling system is much different from the US; high school is the equivalent of grades 10-12 and also holds select courses for university students. School goes from 8:00 am-6:00 pm every day of the week except Wednesday, which is only 8:00-12:00. The schooling grounds resemble more of a college campus than a public American high school--you are free to leave the school grounds and go into town at any point during your breaks.
Every class was one hour long except for long block, which was 2 hours with a 5-10 minute break in-between. Each student was expected to carry around a leather pouch called a trousse which holds pens, pencils, highlighters, erasers, compasses, and sometimes joints/cigarettes. The length of the break depended on the particular day of the week but usually ranged from 2-5 hours in total. Most teachers were rather strict and did not allow you to go to the bathroom at any point during the period. Most gave out many worksheets throughout the lesson that you were expected to glue in your subject notebook.
Each town was fairly small (800-2000 people), so the school I went to was a regional school comprised of 8 or 9 different towns. There were about 1,100 kids that went there. The collège and école primaire were right next to the lycée. My school experience was a bit unique because the high school was under construction, so we were placed in "préfabriqués" (temporary boxes). Some classes were in the actual buildings though. There were buildings A, B, C and your classes were in a combination of the 3. They'd also move around a lot. Example, physique-chimie would be in bat B on Monday and then bat C on Thursday.
English class was a breeze. Kids would always ask me for help, and I was happy to oblige since it was the only class where having me as a partner was of any use. The only time it got annoying was when kids that never bothered to talk to me would hit me up after school asking for English help. My English teacher was admittedly not the greatest at English and I oftentimes had to bite my tongue about certain mistakes she was making. If I was tired then this was the class to sleep through.
On the other end of the spectrum, I found keeping up in French class to be nearly impossible and I think I wound up with a 7/20. We were studying poetry and prose from the 17th and 18th centuries, basically the French Shakespeare equivalents. Looking back I probably should've been placed in a lower-level French class (maybe 7th or 8th grade), which I'm sure I would've learned much more in rather than spending most of my time doodling on the pages.
I felt somewhat isolated at first but was eventually able to tack onto a group of kids. They introduced me to the joys of the French taco, one of the reasons I gained 15 lbs abroad. It's a panini with fries, kebab, special "sauce fromagère", and a select sauce of your choice. The whole thing is about 1000 calories and there was a taco shop on every corner of the street.
School-related culture-shocks:

The French Language

I hugely overestimated how good I was at French. Upon arrival, I was struggling to string basic sentences together despite 4 years of school classes, and could only pick out a few words of what my host family was saying. TV shows and movies were even worse, as French people talk extremely fast in general and even more so on a script. I still struggle with understanding most films.
French students were sometimes unknowingly cruel by mocking my accent, which I worked very hard on perfecting over the course of my stay. On the other hand, they taught me tons of slang. Most French "street slang" are Arabic words imported by Moroccans, Tunisians, and Algerians. The most common one is wesh, which means "yo", but can be used as an exclamation eg "Wesh! Qu'est-ce tu fais là frère??" They also incorporate verlan into their lexicon, which are words with the syllables reversed. Example: frère=reuf, femme=meuf, fou=ouf, vénère=énervé, relou=lourd (annoying), etc. Guys commonly refer to each other by either mec or gros.
Over a period of 8 months, I went from constantly stumbling over my words and needing translations, to speaking at a fluent conversational level and only occasionally needing a translation or workaround word. My accent is not perfect, but it's pretty damn good.

Everyday Life

There wasn't a ton to do on the weekends, so I kind of had to be creative with my time. Sometimes my host mom would run to the local supermarket and I'd tag along and buy myself some candy. French supermarket candy is really good and there are all sorts of stringy sour stuff. I'd spend the majority of the 70€ a month from Rotary on candy, tacos, and stuff at the boulangerie near my school. I'd call my parents for an hour 3-4 times a week as well.
On a few occasions I went into Toulouse with a few friends of mine. We went into various clothing/skating shops and ate at fast food restaurants (Burger King, McDonalds). Sometimes my host brother, who was 23, would take me to the movies with his friends. I didn't understand a ton, but enjoyed the experience regardless. When you ask for popcorn they'll ask if you want it "salé" or "sucré", and to my surprise most people preferred the sugary kettlecorn. Sometimes during the breaks at school I'd walk to the boulangerie on my own and buy a baguette and eat the whole thing raw. My host dad cracked up when I told him about this. My host family also had a pool and a weight room, which I'd use to workout sometimes. I also had a brief stint with the piano once I'd gotten bored enough. I wanted some physical activity so I took up English boxing. It was extremely rigorous and I'd be dead and bruised by the end of every session. I learned I was pretty bad at keeping my hands up and often get punched square in the jaw. My family would sit around the TV most nights watching a talk show called Le Quotidien. It was cool because the people on the show talked a lot slower and it let me learn about French current events and celebrities.
A big part of French culture is having apertif parties and inviting guests over to eat and drink. We'd start out with some wine, or soda for the younger ones, and light food like chips, pretzels, peanuts, jambon, etc. Then we'd have the main course followed by some sort of a dessert. Guests would stay quite a while, usually 4 or 5 hours.
One of my friends from a different town took me to a soirée (party) at his house because his parents were out of town. He invited 5 or 6 other kids. The music was blaring, everyone was drinking and smoking, and several kids were making out. That was a pretty crazy night. I had a few drinks and joints put in front of me and felt pressured, so I made the mistake of drinking and then combining it with marijuana. I spent the rest of the night with an extremely fast heart rate ready to faint, so lesson learned.
I started listening to a lot of popular French rap as well because it was all the kids at the high school were listening to. Artists like Niska, Gambi, Booba, Damso, and Angèle (not a rapper but a cool synth Euro-pop sort of thing). Kids also listened to American music, mainly Drake, Post Malone, Migos, Arianna Grande, and a couple other huge pop/rap artists/groups in US/Canada.

Coronavirus, getting home, and aftermath

Nobody in France was really paying attention to coronavirus too much until about mid-February, much like the US. Unlike America, France was much more on their game about cracking down on the spread of the virus. Macron made a national announcement on TV early March that there would be no school for an indefinite amount of time. This was met with much rejoice by most French students and my French school group chat exploded when the announcement was made. In fact for several hours after the broadcast, the internet was nearly impossible to use because it was so saturated.
The government started quarantine out in 2 week chunks. However as soon as those 2 weeks were up, they'd tack another 2 on. Although I was initially ecastic that school was cancelled, I got bored and depressed being at the house all the time. You needed a mask and print-out form to go outside, and if you were caught without either you were liable to get a hefty fine. So my family barely let me outside out of fear of the pandemic. I wasn't finding any motivation to complete my online French school work because it was defeating the purpose of the exchange (unlike kids who needed to do it to get their baccalaureate). All extracurricular activities halted as well.
At this point there was no reason to continue living in France as I was not gaining any meaningful experiences besides staying at home and following the news on lockdown. So I made the hard decision to return back home. The CDC was pressuring Americans living abroad to come back home anyway, and my mom, an employment lawyer, was not taking any chances. I had less than a 24 hour notice that I'd be going home, which was very hard to break to my family. At this point, a mask was not even required on the plane so I traveled without one. My dad picked me up at Logan and drove me back home. It was weird, almost awkward, seeing my family in person again after so many months.
I reenrolled in my school after about a month of being home and had to complete all of the online work. This was incredibly monotonous but I had no choice.
I haven't been keeping up with my spoken French too much these past few months, however I regularly text my classmates and keep them updated on my life. I watch French YouTube videos to keep up with my comprehension, and it's incredibly satisfying to understand nearly everything being said. I'm skipping ahead to AP French for my junior year of high school, so that's another positive of going to France for the school year.

Conclusion

There is much more that I could add to this entry and things that I haven't covered. I won't lie and say that it was a perfect dream exchange you see in the EF brochures, oftentimes I felt bored because I was in the countryside or overwhelmed at the prospect of being 3,000 miles away from anything I'd ever known. The trip certainly had its highs and its lows, but overall I am very grateful to have gone through this unique experience. My plan is to return back to France for my sophomore or junior year of college, this time in Paris. I will of course also visit the friends and family I made in the South, as they will always be in my heart. Hopefully some people here interested in living abroad in France will find bits of this post useful. And maybe French people will find it interesting to read about France from an American's perspective. If you have any questions, feel free to ask them here or PM me.
Edit: A few commenters have made valid points that my experience in France is not a reflection of everywhere, so it's unfair to generalize. I will keep this constructive critique in mind going forward. I have also added a little bit more about my time in the country.
Also it looks like the leather pouch thing is not necessarily French-specific, but it was something I'd never experienced in the US. Most things like markers, scissors, etc are supplied in the classroom and we're just expected to have one pencil or maybe a pen that we shove up the front pocket of our backpacks. Kids regularly lose their pencils 3+ times a day and the school hallways are usually littered with them.

I have bolded some of the more interesting connections and information, but there could be much more that I overlooked. I hope something here strikes an interest in someone and maybe we can get more investigations out of this. Please, if you know anything more about any of these people than what is presented here, post below. I am working off of the unredacted black book found here: https://www.coreysdigs.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/07/Jeffrey-Epsteins-Little-Black-Book-unredacted.pdf
FINANCE (F)
Bear Stearns: Investment bank that failed during the 2008 recession. Was sold to Chase Bank at $2 a share, a fraction of the actual cost. Epstein started working at Bear Stearns in 1976. He eventually moved up and went on to advise wealthy clients (i.e.Edgar Bronfman, the patriarch of the NXIVM nutjob family) and became a limited partner. Epstein stayed close with the hierarchy (CEOs Alan Greenberg and James Cayne) after he was forced out in 1980 and was a client with Bear Stearns until its collapse in 2008. The name ‘Ira Zichenberg’ appears underneath this entry. Zichenberg was senior managing director at Bear Stearns. His name also appears as a trustee of the J. Epstein Foundation according to its tax filings. Epstein renamed the J. Epstein Foundation to Epstein Interests in 2000. Zicherman was also a trustee of Epstein Interests for the 2000-2001 fiscal year (https://newsfilter.io/articles/records-tie-silicon-valley-venture-capitalist-who-backed-paypal-to-one-of-jeffrey-epsteins-foundations-89e6fb40b6a6b8008f98f017a0dede66).
Centurion: This is a ‘Black Card’ from American Express. Only for the wealthy.
Chemical Bank: One of the largest banks in America during the 1980s and 1990s. It took over Chase Bank in 1996, but rather than continuing under its own name, it adopted the Chase brand. The name ‘James A. Growney’ appears underneath this entry. Growney was Vice President of Chemical Bank.
Colonial Bank: A bank in Palm Beach that was involved in a $5.5 billion mortgage fraud lawsuit (https://www.covertbookreport.com/colonial-bank-in-jeffery-epsteins-little-black-book/). Two names appear beneath this entry. One is Cristina Bello. Couldn’t find any info on her. The other is ‘Leonor.’ This is Leonor Torregroza, a former customer sales officer (https://www.linkedin.com/in/leonor-torregroza-ab460b14) at Colonial. She is part of a class action suit against Colonial Bank founder Robert Lowder for investing their retirement funds in Colonial Bank stock, which plummeted after a Federal takeover (https://www.tuscaloosanews.com/article/DA/20090926/News/606110552/TL). This entry was circled by Epstein’s butler. Names/entities circled by the butler signify people/corporations most complicit in Epstein’s crimes.
Nat West: A major retail and commercial bank in the UK. Considered one of the big four clearing banks in the UK. One of the 17 banks named by The Guardian in connection with laundering KGB money (https://www.theguardian.com/world/2017/ma20/british-banks-handled-vast-sums-of-laundered-russian-money#:~:text=Britain's%20high%20street%20banks%20processed,KGB%2C%20the%20Guardian%20can%20reveal). The name ‘Rob Bowren’ appears below this entry. That is likely Ronnie (Ron) Bowron, senior relationship director.
Natwest Bank: See Nat West (above).
PB National: Palm Beach National Bank that was absorbed by Colonial Bank (above) in 2002. The name ‘Dottie Wilson’ appears beneath this entry. Dottie Wilson was named Assistant Vice President of Palm Beach National Bank & Trust in 1991 (https://www.sun-sentinel.com/news/fl-xpm-1991-02-18-9101090290-story.html). PB National was circled by Epstein’s butler. Names/entities circled by the butler signify people/corporations most complicit in Epstein’s crimes.
FRANCE (FR)
Alaia Azzedine: A clothing and shoe designer who died in 2017. Considered a father figure to Naomi Campbell since she was 16 years old. She even called him “Papa,” although that might have a more sinister meaning considering she moved in with him when she was 16 and staying in Paris (https://www.wmagazine.com/story/azzedine-alaia-dies-naomi-campbell-remembers-designe).
ATT Acess: AT&T access codes number.
Bristol Hotel: 5-star hotel in Paris.
Cab Blue: No info found.
Cabaret (night club): Self-explanatory.
Car rental: Self-explanatory.
Chateau de la Messardier: 5-star hotel.
Chez Denise: Beloved Paris restaurant.
Chez L’Ami Louis: French restaurant visited by the likes of Clinton and Chirac, although many have said the food is disgusting.
Epstein, Jeffrey: You know Epstein, but he does have other names listed under his. I presume most of them were employees of his at his home in France. There were some (Jean Marie, Mr. Comu, Evelyn, Ms. Guerin, Ms. Peres, Mr. Santos) who I could not obtain any information on. However, information is available on the others...
Stephane Coulaux is an attorney who worked for Berlioz, a law firm that Epstein regularly used in France. Coulaux says that Epstein learned about the law firm through an intermediary, Samuel Pisar. Pisar (1926-2015), was a Holocaust survivor who became an international lawyer. Pisar “served at the UN and UNESCO, became an adviser to President JFK, the State Department and Committees of the Senate and the House… counselled governments, corporations, foundations, the International Olympic Committee, and was a highly pursued lecturer who presided over the Davos World Economic Forum, the International Monetary Fund, the New York Council on Foreign Relations, and European Parliament” (http://www.unesco.org/new/fileadmin/MULTIMEDIA/HQ/ERI/pdf/S.Pisar-Biography.pdf). According to Coulaux, Pisar had an address book that was “on a whole different level from that of Epstein” (https://www.leparisien.ffaits-divers/affaire-esptein-les-nombreux-liens-du-millionnaire-avec-la-france-13-08-2019-8133258.php).
Experton is Marie-Joseph Experton**, another Epstein lawyer who handled Epstein’s affairs (https://www.francetvinfo.fmonde/usa/affaire-jeffrey-epstein/enquete-franceinfo-jeffrey-epstein-un-homme-poli-et-genereux-qui-aimait-la-compagnie-des-femmes-selon-son-homme-a-tout-faire-francais_3595669.html).**
Valdson Cotrin’s name has arrows next to it. These were written by Epstein’s butler to indicate that Cotrin, at the very least, knew about Epstein’s child rape and trafficking. Twitter user AgentHades has a lot of info on Cotrin here (https://twitter.com/Agenthades1/status/1154147941763805184), although it is still not 100% clear what he does. Some believe he was Epstein’s long-time chauffeur in France. Cotrin’s name was listed four times in Epstein’s Lolita Express flight log (https://archive.org/stream/EpsteinFlightLogsLolitaExpress/Jeffrey-Epstein-Flight-Logs-in-PDF-format_djvu.txt).
Epstein Jeffrey (G): This entry has a number of names, but they all seem to be normal workers.
Experton, Marie Joseph: Epstein lawyer who handled Epstein’s affairs (https://www.francetvinfo.fmonde/usa/affaire-jeffrey-epstein/enquete-franceinfo-jeffrey-epstein-un-homme-poli-et-genereux-qui-aimait-la-compagnie-des-femmes-selon-son-homme-a-tout-faire-francais_3595669.html).
Gerard: Not enough info.
Hotel Crillon: Historic luxury hotel in Paris.
Hotel Raffael: Five-star Paris hotel that has hosted many famous celebrities.
Junot Philippe: Venture capitalist and property developer. Junot was the 1st husband of Princess Caroline of Monaco.
L’Amijean: Paris restaurant.
L’Arc: Not sure. Couldn’t find any info.
L’Arpege: 3 Michelin-star restaurant in Paris.
La Merlot: Paris restaurant.
La Poste: Restaurant.
Lagardere, Betty: A socialite and former Brazilian model. She was married to Jean-Luc Lagardere, a major French businessman, until his death in 2003.
Lawyers: Two names are listed under this entry. One is Stephane Coulaux, who you can read about above under the first Jeffrey Epstein entry. The other is Geraldine Talavera, who I couldn’t find much info on.
Le Telegraphe: French restaurant just a short walk from the Louvre. Now closed.
Le Voltaire: French restaurant. The name ‘Madame Lemercier’ appears below this entry. Couldn’t find any info on her.
Maid: I’m guessing these are Epstein’s maids. Three names listed underneath are Faiza, Jean Marie, and Anne. Not enough info on any of them.
Massage - Paris: There are a lot of individuals listed under this entry. I couldn’t find out who any of them were. Epstein had 30 phone numbers listed under Paris - Massage. This entry was circled by Jeffrey Epstein’s butler. Circled names/places signify those who were likely involved in or likely knew about Epstein’s crimes.
Miele, Mr & Mrs: No info found.
Ott Cynthia and Claude: Claude Ott is a wine tycoon most famous for throwing a “wild party” attended by Prince Andrew in which the underage toe sucker was pictured getting cozy with socialite Chris Von Aspen (https://www.the-sun.com/news/68145/unearthed-pics-show-prince-andrew-partying-hard-and-doing-pdas-despite-claiming-never-doing-so-in-car-crash-interview/). Cynthia was his wife of 17 years. They divorced in 2005.
Pinto, Alberto: A Paris-based photographer and world famous interior designer. Pinto’s name appears at least 12 times in Jeffrey Epstein’s Lolita Express flight log (https://archive.org/stream/EpsteinFlightLogsLolitaExpress/Jeffrey-Epstein-Flight-Logs-in-PDF-format_djvu.txt). The number could be quite higher since Epstein sometimes used initials instead of full names. The initials ‘AP’ appear a lot. Pinto was on a flight with Virginia Roberts shortly before she was forced to have sex with Prince Andrew (https://pagesix.com/2015/01/08/epstein-rendezvoused-with-sex-slave-before-pimping-her-out/). His name was also circled by Jeffrey Epstein’s butler, signifying involvement in or knowledge of Epstein’s crimes.
There is an amazing in-depth thread from Reddit user kaalout on Pinto here (https://www.reddit.com/conspiracy/comments/cdk95j/epstein_flight_passenger_alberto_pinto/). TLDR: Pinto was good friends with Yves Saint Laurent and several other (alleged) pedophiles.
Plaza Athenee - Paris: Historic five-star luxury hotel in Paris.
Restaurant - takeouts: Sushi restaurant.
Restaurants: French steakhouse.
Ritz - Paris: Beautiful hotel in France. Owned by Mohamed Al-Fayed who was the father of Dodi Fayed (1955-1997). If Dodi sounds familiar, it is because he died in a car crash along with his girlfriend, Princess Diana. Mohamed Al-Fayed is convinced that his son and Princess Diana were murdered by MI6 agents (https://web.archive.org/web/20071221135615/http://news.independent.co.uk/people/profiles/article3033375.ece).
River Cafe: Restaurant in France.
Tante Louise: A restaurant just a short walk away from La Madeleine church. Now closed.

Honeybee
Honeybee
Could you imagine where our lives would lead?
While I KNEW I would write this Snippet one day, I NEVER thought my Narrative would unfold like THIS, especially with a truly Soul-ripping twist I NEVER noticed until only minutes before the End over a decade later.
I try to avoid too much of my Life bleeding into my Snippets (some is unavoidable, since I write from my Experience). Not this Time, this Snippet shines the spotlight directly on the single biggest part of my Life (other than myself, of course), my Lifelong Love Honeybee.
A Lifelong Love is a very special type of Love, and each Life has room for only ONE Lifelong Love (but that one is FAR from guaranteed). There can only be ONE Love who meets you as a young adult, and continues with you on your Path for decades as together the two of you learn about each other and Reality, and then blaze a Path together into the Future hand-in-hand through births, deaths, jobs, burnt dinners, drunk relatives, and all the other Joys and Pains that Life brings.
For me, that Lifelong Love is Honeybee, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Our Lifelong Love has been sans pareille. She’s the Bestest Lifelong Love in History.
She was my Honeybee, and I was her Honeybee. What we are now to each other in this Impossible Year, and what we will be going forward, remains to be determined.
One Hundred Magickal Hours
On October 15th, 1987, I was home on leave, playing bridge at the local college when two of my buddies had to go to class, and Honeybee decided to Sit Down Beside Me, began talking, and started a Discussion with me. This was our first Moment together. She was a young beautiful brilliant cultured refined six foot blonde dressed in a true vision of late Reagan America with hairspray, Bass Weejuns, natural fibers, glasses with HUGE frames, shoulder pads, and more hairspray. Her Consciousness was blazing, and our Discussion added subject after subject such as why Bork had to be borked, to the impact of fire on the beginnings of civilization, welfare reform, etc. We were jumping from topic to topic, never losing the other, and both of us were having a great time.
An hour later, she had to go to class, but said she would return afterwards and we could continue our Discussion then if I was still here. My other buddy decided to take off and asked I wanted to come along. I said “Nah, she’s really smart and really cute. It’s worth an hour to see if she comes back.”
It’s obvious what happened an hour later.
Honeybee and I just kept our Discussion going hour after hour, topic after topic getting added, over dinner, driving around, back to her place and we talked until we fell asleep. OK, we did a few things OTHER than talking, but that was really just as offshoot of the talking (that’s my story and I’m sticking to it, ask Honeybee for her side if you want).
DC, the OG Road Trip
Friday evening, Honeybee had a road trip planned with a girlfriend of hers to Washington, DC, so I figured that this was going to be the last day I would spend with Honeybee before I had to return to base Monday. Coincidentally (synchronistically?), the driver had to bail so she drafted me into driving (IMO, more than a fair trade for few extra days with Honeybee).
This Road Trip set the standard for the many hundreds to follow.
Honeybee had her Violent Femmes tape, so we sang Blister in the Sun, Kiss Off, Gone Daddy Gone. The radio added I Got My Mind Set on You – George Harrison, Didn’t We Almost Have It All – Whitney Houston, I Think We’re Alone Now – Tiffany.
Everyone had a great time popping around DC for a couple days, Honeybee and I keeping that Discussion rolling. I found a treasure, a Magentalane album by Klaatu at a record store which would add many songs to our NEXT Road Trip like Mrs. Toad’s Cookies – Klaatu and our favorite to hear when we are almost Home, Magentalane – Klaatu
Black Monday
Honeybee was back in class Monday, and I needed to leave Monday evening. Honeybee and I realized that we had something Real and something VERY SPECIAL, but we lived 800 miles apart at the time. We agreed that we would try to see each other as much as possible, and when in the same city we were each other’s priorities, but otherwise we would live separate Lives and inform the other if there was “Something they needed to know,” which meant another Relationship which was rising in seriousness and a potential threat.
During our discussion, we noted that the stock market was crashing and had been the end of last week and this day would be called Black Monday. We laughed when we noticed that it started tanking roughly the same time Honeybee sat down to start our Discussion. We joked that us getting together had crashed the stock market.
The Honeybee Team Supreme
Together, Honeybee and I formed a Partnership capable of absolutely ANYTHING. Where I was weak, she was strong, and vice versa (and our strengths overlapped FAR more than they gapped).
My mental condition which Honeybee and I deduced as around the Asperger’s/Dyssemia area of the autism spectrum (we always refer to it as simply “Dyssemia”). My Dyssemia is inextricably linked to so many of my greatest strengths and weaknesses. While I have phenomenal intellectual capabilities, an Exceptional Memory which functions much like “Flashbacks” where I remember by reliving my Experiences with that information (both Good and Bad), and Math as my primary language, these abilities are achieved through a trade-off leaving me always an Individual, unable to join a Group or Consensus, and totally lacking in ANY “common sense”, lol.
Honeybee, OTOH, has her own set of phenomenal intellectual capabilities, her own Exceptional Memory which functions differently than mine (she considers mine “better”), fantastic language skillz, with a strong connection to and understand of the Consensus.
Honeybee can process data and multitask better than anyone, period. Watching her at full speed is an amazing sight. My specialties are pattern recognition, Gnosis, and penetrating focus. As individuals, we were Phenomenal. As the Honeybee Team Supreme, we were Transcendent.
Honeybee was the Yin to my Yang. We made an unbeatable Partnership, and proceeded to start taking Reality by storm.
Honeybee
I can't imagine how my life would be
If all your gravity did not hit me
Oh, don't you see?
Darling, my honeybee
Transplants
After spending a few years finishing college and taking the first few steps into the outside World, Honeybee and I recognized that we were “deadended” in our current location and decided to relocate. I wisely agreed with her when she suggested Central Florida because “If people save for a year or two to spend a week there, it’s GOT to be a good place to live.” And it hasn’t just been been a good place to live, it’s been SPECTACULAR!!! Honeybee made another of her great calls which possibly saved our Lives.
Honeybee and I packed every item we owned (and her cat who had adopted me as his hero) from The Old Apartment into a U-Haul and drove to the horizon to start our new Life without ANY idea where we were going to Live other than “Central Florida”. We were poster candidates for “Fools Rush In”, but Honeybee and I pulled it off yet again. We were truly The Honeybee Team Supreme, and nothing was impossible for us.
It was Just Like Heaven
But here we are
After all the messes and confessions
To the stars
That we never really owned as ours
The Honeybee Team Supreme’s Greatest Hits
Honeybee and I have shared so many truly spectacular Moments over our decades together. Here’s a sample of the highlights.
Travel
Honeybee and I took our first Road Trip the day after we met, and we never stopped until we recently parted.
The Honeybee Team Supreme does Road Trips RIGHT. The vehicle barely stops, bathroom breaks try to fit in gas stops, prepack food, we have it down after MANY hundreds.
Songs are chosen for singalongs, especially to stay awake driving. We started with our playlist from that OG DC trip and have added so many more like Goodbye Yellow Brick Road – Elton John, Paradise by the Dashboard Light – Meatloaf, One Headlight – Wallflowers, etc.
The Honeybee Team Supreme has been knocking out “Must Sees” for our Babybees as we enjoy them ourselves. A partial list:
Grand Canyon St Louis Arch NYC Washington DC Monument Valley Pike’s Peak Garden of the Gods Graceland Petroglyph National Monument Monticello Salt Lake City Yellowstone
We watched one of the very final Dreams Come True Fireworks performances from the top of the Contemporary Resort while eating unlimited sushi with an open bar as part of our hundreds of trips to Disneyworld.
Movies
Honeybee and I shared our Love of movies from the very beginning of our Conversation. We were both surprised we shared the same 40 year old black and white movie as our favorite: Holiday Inn. I had discovered it wrapping Christmas presents with my mother, as did Honeybee, so we naturally made this a Honeybee Team Supreme tradition.
We debated the “proper” ending for movies like Pretty in Pink, tossed themes back and forth, and were our own Honeybee Team Supreme version of Siskel and Ebert.
Honeybee and I Loved going to the movies, and 1999 the peak for us. Virtually every time we saw a movie, it was either phenomenal or fun. That was a GREAT year with Honeybee. Look at the movies we saw:
10 Things I Hate About You 13th Warrior American Beauty American Pie Any Given Sunday Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me Blair Witch Project Being John Malkovich Boys Don't Cry Cider House Rules Dick Dogma Election Eyes Wide Shut Existenz Fight Club For the Love of the Game Go Green Mile Iron Giant House on Haunted Hill Last Night Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels Matrix The Mummy Never Been Kissed Notting Hill Office Space Payback Magnolia Man on the Moon Mystery Men She's All That Sixth Sense Sleepy Hollow South Park Star Wars Episode I Stigmata Summer of Sam Talented Mr. Ripley Tarzan Thomas Crown Affair Topsy-Turvy Toy Story 2 Wild Wild West The World Is Not Enough
And just seeing the movies doesn’t cover the whole “movie experience”, because so many times our friends would add some of the best parts (like “Heavily Implied” taking on new meaning after American Beauty)
We Love Charlie Kaufman, Spike Jonze, Michel Gondry, and similar movies like Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind with Wish You Were Here, Adaptation, etc. We Love classic movies, art movies, animation, etc.
Let’s just say Honeybee and I Love movies a LOT (and have a thousand discs still to watch).
Television
Honeybee and I were First Fandom for Reality TV, watching the OG Real World. While MOST Reality TV is beyond the Pale for us, we have passed this on to our Babybees. As a Hive, we watch Big Brother, Amazing Race, Project Runway, Top Chef, and similar shows and analyze the competitors and the competition (our Babybees are VERY astute).
Theatre
Live theatre has always been a special treat for Honeybee and me, and something we truly savor. Some of our favorites:
A spectacular performance of Fuenteovejuna at the Folger Shakespeare Theatre in Washington, DC in one of their rare non-Shakespeare plays.
An incredible college performance of The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Rupert Holmes of Escape (The Pina Colada Song) in the Annie Russell Theatre where the audience selection of the ending gave a lesser player a chance to shine, and boy did he.
So many local and community theatres like Manhattan South Studio Theatre, with productions like The Brady Bunch (The Second Coming of Jan), the Glass Jar, and countless others. Those shows took on additional special meaning when we knew the actors or writers.
The UNFORGETTABLE (unless you were my friend who slept through the whole thing) most self-indulgent FIVE hour Sherlock Holmes play EVER (with two intermissions). The second intermission included a police scene with a dead body in the middle of the road (we concluded the body was someone trying to RUN as fast as possible away from the Play, and that he was in better shape since he wasn’t going back inside for the rest), and ended with the announcement “IF anyone wants to go back in and watch, we will be starting soon.” We ALL rolled at the “IF”.
And, of course, Bandstand on Broadway.
Sports
My family’s relationship with Sports runs very deep and very wide. Honeybee jumped right in and she did a great job.
While I’m not sure she’s EVER understood the point of showing up to a spring training game over an hour early (“Why watch them bat when it doesn’t count?”), Honeybee REALLY enjoyed the one spring training game we NEVER saw. We met a few of my cousins before the game at the team’s hotel bar for a drink. Much like that Lays Potato chip, ONE drink is NOT possible when 1980 American League Rookie of the Year Super Joe Charboneau is buying using the Indian’s team expense account (Go Joe Charboneau for SURE). And when Super Joe is buying the drinks, getting you drunk, and telling story after story of his exploits, you never make it to the game. Those stories start with the famous ones that surfaced his rookie year, like drinking beer through a straw through his NOSE, him fixing that nose when it was broken using pliers and a few shots of Jack Daniel’s, and doing his own dental work, but they don’t end there. Honeybee and I both agree, once in their Life, everyone should have Super Joe get them drunk (it’s not to be missed).
Honeybee and I went to a LOT of sporting events, but my favorite Moment with her concerning sports was a Moment she took the initiative and Planned herself for me.
For Christmas in 2002, Honeybee gave me two tickets for us to see the North Carolina Scholastic Classic on January 20, 2003. That meant I was FINALLY going to get to see Lebron James play in my alma mater’s Green and Gold Irish jersey (Honeybee gave me one of those the next year). So Honeybee and I made another of our patented Road Trips, and I was not disappointed to see in person the phenomenon my brother told me could have jumped to the NBA after his freshman year of high school. LeBron did the IMPOSSIBLE, he successfully DEFENDED a 3 on 1 fast break (no human being should be able to do that). After I saw that, I turned to Honeybee and said “If he doesn’t get hurt and doesn’t lose his head, he can make a run at surpassing Jordan, because LeBron is drawing from the largest skill set I’ve ever seen with a perfect body.” Honeybee agreed and still does.
Concerts
Honeybee and I saw so very many great concerts together, there’s no way to do them justice. The best part for me was ALWAYS that I was sharing the experience with Honeybee (she ALWAYS makes even the most bland Experience wonderful for me).
We watched Crosby, Stills, and Nash open for the Grateful Dead at Three Rivers Stadium after wandering around for hours with the Deadheads (and we still have out tie-dye t-shirts).
Lifehouse, Everclear, and Matchbox Twenty performed a triple bill where a Joyous Art Alexakis who stole the entire show from Rob Thomas’ homecoming by having security chase him and his wireless guitar up and down the stairs of the Orena.
Wang Chung, Flock of Seagulls, Missing Persons, Gene Loves Jezebel rocked the House of Blues
We jammed to Experimental Jazz at the Disney Institute, countless concerts at Disneyworld (we skipped most because they didn’t fit our schedule well), etc.
Ushered in 2000 with Blue Meridian at the Have A Nice Day Cafe.
We stood right in front of the stage on Pleasure Island while Modern English sang Melt With You for food, followed by World Party in the rain.
Honeybee had to drag me away from Steve Kilbey of The Church when he was was too busy talking to me about my business and playing the “Proud Poppa” showing off his daughter’s artwork from college to remember to get ready for the concert in a tiny club.
Roger Daltrey delivered Tommy backed by the Cleveland Orchestra at Blossom in a performance Roger KNEW he had in him and had always wanted to give, and he gave that performance of his Life (we were so glad he didn’t “Die Before He Get Old” for Honeybee and I to have yet another of our Moments).
Our LAST concert was March 7, right before concerts went away, when we watched Michael Stanley Strike Up the Band One FINAL Time from the first row of the orchestra pit (if Honeybee and I never see another concert together, that was a Moment I’ll be happy to go out on).
People
The people who have crossed Honeybee’s and my Path, and walked with us for a while, demonstrate some SERIOUS “strength through diversity”.
Honeybee and I have yet to find people we don’t like (other than rude hurtful people, of course), and we have socialized across the entire social spectrum. We’ve gone out to dinner with couples who were having their version of our “smothered chicken”, we’ve joked with billionaires over which loge they watched the baseball team they own, we’ve watched Super Bowls and NBA Finals with hoop friends from pick-up games on the playground, we’ve plot doctored books and had the authors dedicate the book to us in thanks, etc.
Many interrelated circles of friends grew around the Honeybee Team Supreme, we had friends of all sorts. Honeybee and I struggled to figure out if we could fit TWO days at home a week into our social callendar.
Look around
We made a garden of the love we found
So many reasons I would fight to stay
You're the courage when I fade
Take a look at what we've made
Marriage
In 1996, I was working on our finances, and I shared with Honeybee that we would save about $3,000 if we were married, she got one of those looks of hers on her face, and I asked “Do you want to?” Not the most romantic or greatest of proposals, but she accepted anyway.
That great group of friends we assembled came together and threw us a FABULOUS Wedding, a bit Fandango style. We did everything backwards, a formal brunch followed by the ceremony in a beautiful rose garden. The reception was at a friends’ house, and then the after-reception of pizza and beer at yet another friends’ house around the block. Special people who shared a special day with us.
Missing were any rings. Honeybee is VERY particular about jewelry. She doesn’t like men wearing jewelry, so I have NEVER worn a wedding ring, at her request. As for her rings, at the time we could not justify the Engagement Ring she wanted, a 1 ½ carat emerald cut ring. I promised that ring to Honeybee, and she will have it, even if I have to give it to her at the finalization of the divorce as a “Thank you for having BEEN my wife” Ring rather than an Engagement Ring.
That silly ring, it wasn't meant to be
Luckily you saw in me
Something I couldn't see
”My Mind Is Gone, Is It EVER Coming Back!?!”
In late 2003, we succeeded in becoming pregnant with our first Babybee. The Collaboration we had been Planning and Loving toward had reached a new stage. still remember making special note of one of those Moments with Honeybee in early 2004 when we were Pregnant with our son. I brought her breakfast in bed (coffee for decades was standard, with extras like breakfast often added), and found her crying. I asked in a panic what was wrong, and Honeybee sobbed out, “My Mind is gone, is it EVER coming back!?!” All these strange Feelings and Emotions were taking over her Mind and Body, and she could tell that she was changing and becoming different than she had been before we got Pregnant.
I laughed and explained to her that those changes were her Body and Mind changing to give Birth to Babybee and become a Mommybee. I said that those changes were going to be in place until we decided to stop having children and breastfeeding, which was planned after our second child in about 5 years. That brought more tears from Honeybee and more laughter from me.
I NEVER should have been laughing, because I was horribly wrong about her Mind returning in 5 years. That wonderful incredible beautiful Mind she had shared with me for almost 20 years NEVER returned to what she shared with me before getting pregnant.
I NOW see the Moment of which I made that special note was NOT simply one of those tender Husband/Wife Moments that they look back on fondly (as Honeybee and I did so many times with this Moment, each of which now carries a touch of ash to me). No, this was the Honeybee I met in 1987, that incredible brilliant beautiful young woman to whom I instantly Bonded and Loved, with whom I started “officially” cohabiting in 1990, sweated out Midwest winters with windows open on a third floor of a Victorian house turned into a VERY cheap apartment (we did go out to dinner once a week for smothered chicken for under $20 total, tip included), packed every single one of our belongings into the back of a U-Haul to drive a thousand miles without a CLUE of where we were going to Live in 1993 (at once the Greatest and most Foolish thing we EVER did), started a business based on sharing my Love with others, launched her career and proudly watched her climb the corporate ladder saying “Farewell” to me, HER Honeybee
The Honeybee I Knew and Loved was actually saying “Goodbye” to me, and I didn’t Know it. I didn’t realize that my Honeybee I had Known and Loved for 16 years was leaving me, and from then on gradually my Loving Partner Honeybee would being replaced one tiny piece at a time by Mommybee, who does NOT Love me (or even understand I’m human) and sees me only as a resource for our Babybees.
I NEVER should have laughed, I should have been crying right alongside her. Now, I’ll be doing a LOT of crying not by her side waving Goodbye to my wonderful Honeybee in the Past who left me all those many years ago, but I never Knew she had gone. I’ve got a LOT of mourning to catch up on.
I’m giving you a horribly belated Goodbye now, Honeybee.
I’ve missed you so very much, especially these last few years. I’ve been so terribly Lost and Lonely without you (Mommybee abandoned our Discussion years ago, and you’ve only chipped in every so often since). I’m sorry I didn’t give you a proper Goodbye at the Time, but I didn’t Know you were going away Forever. We BOTH thought you were coming back. I didn’t even Know you were still Gone until last month. I really didn’t, Honeybee. Honest.
Such a fool
I took your love and I bent all the rules
You took the blow and didn't let it show
Stuck around to let me know
Built a family of our own
Male Light and Female Void
How could the Honeybee Team Supreme have missed such a crucial element, which eventually derailed their entire Plan? The answer is found in a VERY strange place.
Honeybee and I enjoyed exploring some of the most obscure areas of Reality in hope of finding Art and Artists. One of the most UNIQUE and GREATEST examples of Art we EVER found was the comic series Cerebus done by Dave Sim. IMO, Cerebus is the Finnegan’s Wake of comics and Sim is hands down the greatest living comic Artist. Sim’s 26 years of constant work on Cerebus produced that Artistic Alchemy where the Art and the Artist merge (which Sim later takes religious and visionary, producing an even MORE idiosyncratic work).
For all their magnificence, Sim and Cerebus are marred by what is a fatal flaw in most people’s eyes: Sim does not think or believe the genders are equal, and expresses his views in a strangely ham-fisted way which regularly melts down.
Honeybee and I LOVED extracting those parts which were Outrageous, and those parts which Sim had hit Truth (he has HUGE amounts of BOTH). Sometimes Outrageous and Truth were the same, as often happens in Art.
Here’s a summary of Sim’s system:
The Thinking Reasoning Male Light is Seminal Energy, while the Feeling Emotional Female Void is an Omnivorous Parasite.
The Male Light and Female Void can be combined by marriage into a Merged Permanence, with the components now called Merged Light and Merged Void. When Kids come Merged Light becomes Family Man.
All these Voids can be combined into a “Greater Void Wife and Kids” Omnivorous Engine, which serves the Vaginal Bottom Line. The Omnivorous Engine drives society through Lesser Void of White Collar Make-Work Programs.
The Female Void is essentially a black hole of resource need “For the Kids”, based on an Emotional and Feeling level. The Male Light cannot win on the Thinking and Reason level, as those are higher.
Many people see Sim’s Female Void as an Evil Woman, and dismiss him as a misogynist.
I’ve stripped as much of Sim’s “Simness” out of his system as I can. Here are some original sources for those who wish to read for themselves (insert all trigger warnings here): Male Light and Female Void, Reads, Tangents.
Mommybee
The Honeybee Team Supreme’s mistake is to think we were already a Merged Permanence which had avoided the Female Void issue. Honeybee is a Brilliant and Conscious woman, NOT a Female Void. We had been the Honeybee Team Supreme for almost 20 years, and no Female Void issues. We Knew the Female Void existed, but we thought we had the Female Void beat.
We were wrong. We were messing with Mother Nature, and it’s NOT nice to mess with Mother Nature.
We had not anticipated Mommybee being a Female Void and slowly robbing Honeybee of her Consciousness, leaving only Mommybee the Feeling Female Void.
When I joked with Honeybee when we were pregnant with our first Babybee, I had a general idea of the process, but the parts I missed were crucial. Emotion, Feeling, and Thought are progressive levels of abstraction, and the higher rests on the lower, with Thought supported by Feeling supported by Emotion.
My wonderful Conscious Honeybee had those three perfectly balanced, but when we got pregnant, Mommybee the Female Void which needs to provide for her Babybees ABOVE ALL ELSE disrupted her balance and Mommybee started to take over for Honeybee. As long as Honeybee and Mommybee agreed, all was well, but if they disagreed, Mommybee would win with Feeling and degrade Honeybee’s Consciousness a piece more.
I had NO idea that Mommybee was doing this until last month, so I kept executing the Plan which Honeybee and I had developed over 20 years. When Mommybee would criticize me and overrule me, I thought that was Honeybee, so I would try to Reason with her, explain that I was doing as we had Planned. Mommybee, the Female Void, saw Reason as a THREAT to her Babybees, and fought Honeybee’s Reason, and Honeybee played the rope in a Tug of War between me and Mommybee over her Babybees (a war I had NO CLUE was happening).
I am horrified that I was DESTROYING Honeybee when I was trying to follow the Plan the Honeybee Team Supreme had decided years earlier. But this Tug of War has been going on for 16 years, and Mommybee is clearly in control, with only little glimpses of Honeybee surfacing every so often.
Honeybee has lost her Consciousness, leaving Mommybee in charge until Mommybee can stop worrying so much because the Babybees are fully raised. That’s another five to ten years of Mommybee before there is much chance of Honeybee returning on a regular basis.
MAYBE.
What If?
Neither Honeybee nor I knew that us finally having the children to whom we so looked forward and had planned and worked for 15 years would unleash Mommybee and set in motion a process that eventually stole my Honeybee from me just like Alzheimer’s had taken my mother, one piece of her fabulous Mind disappearing at a Time until that incredible woman I Love so greatly was unrecognizable and GONE.
But if we HAD Known, would we have changed things (I would have changed how much I appreciated those days with just me and Honeybee, and then been prepared to adjust to Mommybee rather than blindsided)?
Other than being forewarned that Honeybee was going to transform into Mommybee, and preparing for that change, I don’t think there’s ANYTHING we would have done differently. Honeybee wanted me for her Love, her Partner, and the Father of her Babybees. She would have been incomplete without her Babybees, and I would NEVER want her incomplete for me to selfishly spend more Time with Honeybee, regardless of the Pain fulfilling our Dream of Babybees has caused me. Neither of us would have wanted anyone else to be the Father of her Babybees.
And I would never trade a Moment I got to spend with Honeybee for all the Pain and Suffering which Mommybee later inflicted upon me.
Soulmates
While Honeybee and I are Lifelong Loves, I thought for certain that we were also Soulmates, Ride together until one Dies, just like my parents with my father adding months to my mother’s Life through sheer force of Will and an eyedropper to feed her (and expert medical and legal skillz). In retrospect, I really should have paid MUCH more attention to how much Honeybee enjoyed For No One by the Beatles (she’s NEVER “needed” me, our Team Supreme was based on “Love” and “want”, NOT “need”) and the precedent of HER parent’s marriage, who separated and divorced when Honeybee and her brother were the same ages as our Babybees.
While Honeybee intended to be my Soulmate, Mommybee is NOT my Soulmate, she is a Female Void who has slowly taken over my Honeybee, one piece at a time.
Mommybee wants all my Resources and me to be happy just handing them over. I disagree, and that provokes Mommybee to attack me as if her Babybees’ Lives depend on it. Our differing POVs on this point DESPERATELY needs to be solved, but no solution is “pretty”.
Babybees
When I look at the Babybees which Honeybee and I Planned, Worked, and Loved so very hard to bring into Reality, I see that our efforts exceeded even our wildest Dreams. Our Babybees are absolutely spectacular, even more beautiful and brilliant than Honeybee and I could have ever Hoped. They are each special in their own ways, taking after Honeybee and I, yet adding their own unique spin. I could not be more proud of myself, Honeybee, Mommybee, and the Babybees in making this Collaboration a such a roaring success.
There will be NO Cat’s in the Cradle for me. I was with my Babybees CONSTANTLY with only a few hours off at a time until Mommybee decided to leave with our Babybees last month. I will always know that I was there during ALL their important formative years, because I’ve changed more diapers, driven to more sporting events, spent fewer days away from the Babybees, etc.
I even added my own new special touch to their education, riffing off Socrates, and taking his method to the next level. Instead of me focusing on pouring information and knowledge into our Babybees Minds by using questions to teach THEM, I let them teach ME their next lesson while I “played dumb”. This allowed me to focus their teaching attention at the exact point they needed to Know next, while giving them great confidence in their abilities to observe Reality and draw proper conclusions. I have helped them assemble models of Reality unlike ANY before them, totally unique and custom fit to THEM in new ways they found for themselves.
I look forward to the great Paths that will unfold before them. Those Paths will be Magickal and Marvelous. These Babybees of Honeybee and mine are truly special.
I just REALLY wish Honeybee and I could celebrate them. Or that I could celebrate them with Mommybee and our Babybees, rather than just watch their magnificent glory from a distance, which is what I anticipate happening.
But here we are
After all the messes and confessions
To the scars
That we never really owned as ours
One First Date
So, what’s next for me?
I’m going to Disneyworld, of course. What else would make any sense?
My Plan is to try and see what, if ANY, health dynamic might begin to be established between Mommybee and myself, now that I realize I am no longer married to Honeybee. Some sort of effective dynamic needs to be established because I’m going to be co-parenting with Mommybee for years, regardless of anything else.
Mommybee has agreed to take a day off her very important job (it really is, I’m very proud of how fantastically Honeybee/Mommybee’s career has progressed and I’m proud of the bits of help I’ve given her here and there, she’s a truly incredible woman) and leave the Babybees at her home so the the two of us can have a CHANCE to spend a day at Disneyworld as a couple like we we used to decades ago (the entire family tried a few weeks ago and didn’t make it long).
But I also have a Hope.
I’ve asked Mommybee to stay at her home with the Babybees this time and let me have the day with Honeybee.
I’m counting this as that “First Date” Honeybee and I always joked about NEVER having. At this point, I just want one day and one date with Honeybee, and this might be the LAST and ONLY chance I ever have.
I’m going to try and have a Moment with Honeybee and tell her how much I Miss her and I Love her. I Know now not to use those Facts and Logic which Honeybee Loves so much, but Mommybee despises when they conflict with her and her Babybees’ desires. I’ll focus on all those great Feeling and Emotions Honeybee and I had in the Past (and there were SO very many, and they were SO very great).
I’ll NEVER be able to fit all I want to say to Honeybee into a single Moment, even if we manage to stretch that Moment the entire day. But there is one thing I ABSOLUTELY WILL tell Honeybee.
“You’re the one. You’re the ONLY one.”
She’s my Honeybee, and I am her Honeybee.
She’s the Bestest Lifelong Love EVER.
For Crying Out Loud, I Love you, Honeybee.
And if our world comes tumbling down
I never could forgive myself for leaving out
You're the one
You are the only one
Won't you decide?
Won't you decide?
I want you to soar
Don't doubt anymore
(Little by little, we meet in the middle)
Won't you decide?
(What's your name?)
Won't you decide?

Honeybee
Won't you decide?

https://www.facebook.com/kevinmarquisss/videos/280955753008258/
https://www.facebook.com/skradz/posts/10158233863317570

2020.04.22 09:48 SesshamoNekodearuzo Lockdown Exit Set to Reveal Europe’s Grim Toll of Domestic Abuse

For most of Europe, the easing of coronavirus lockdowns in the coming weeks will bring relief and a sense that the worst is over. For the social workers tracking domestic abuse, it’s likely to uncover more terrible news.
Many women trapped with violent partners have been unable to leave home to seek help and in some cases the abusers have destroyed their mobile phones, according to Fiona Dwyer, the chief executive of Solace Women’s Aid, London’s largest provider of domestic-abuse support services.
That’s left them with no way of contacting police or calling victim-support hotlines and means large numbers of women are expected to reach out as confinement measures are eased.
“We’re preparing for a huge spike in demand post-lockdown,” Dwyer said in an interview. “We generally see post-Christmas a massive spike in demand. This is Christmas on steroids.”
Dwyer’s concerns are echoed in towns and cities across Europe, where more people live in smaller apartments than in the U.S. and the confinement rules have typically been more extreme. In France, reports of domestic abuse to the police jumped by a third in the first week of the nation’s lockdown, French Interior Minister Christophe Castaner said last month, and by even more in densely packed Paris.
Three days of mourning were declared in the Spanish town of Almassora last month after a woman was killed by her husband in front of their two children.
In the face of such violence, activists and local authorities on Spain’s Canary Islands set up Mascarilla-19, a program that allows victims of abuse to report the crimes at any local pharmacy by asking for a “mascarilla” -- Spanish for mask -- followed by the number “19.” Pharmacists, trained to expect the code word, then contact police.
Mascarilla-19 has since spread to Italy, Germany, Norway, the U.K. and France and also to Africa and South America, said Kika Fumero, director of the Canaries’ Institute for Equality, which started the program. She too expects a surge in reported cases when the Spanish lockdown ends, and that Mascarilla meets a fundamental need.

‘Completely Exportable’

“Mascarilla-19 has been a success but sadly because domestic violence is a universal reality, it’s completely exportable,” she said in an interview.
Dwyer, of Solace Women’s Aid, said there’ve been calls in the U.K. to set up a similar program in supermarkets. However, she’s not convinced it would work given every employee in a large store would need to be trained and abusive men may not allow their partners to leave home to go shopping.
In the first week of the U.K.’s lockdown, domestic abuse reports were up by 49% compared to an average week in January according to U.K. charity Crimestoppers.

More Shocking

The figures for deaths are more shocking. In the first three weeks of the U.K.’s lockdown, there were at least 16 domestic-abuse homicides, according to Solace, which cited figures tracked by a campaign called Counting Dead Women. That’s more than double the normal rate, and the highest it’s been for 11 years, in the aftermath of the financial crisis.
Two of those killed in the U.K. were children -- underscoring how confinement in cramped accommodation also ramps up the risks that kids will fall prey to either an abusive parent, relative or online predator, the United Nations warned earlier this month.
Amid pressure from child psychologists, Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez said on April 18 his government will seek to relax rules that have prevented most kids from leaving their homes since mid-March.
Back in the U.K., the government last week extended the lockdown for three weeks and is, for the time being, resisting calls for a quick end to restrictions on mobility.
Dwyer is urging the government to increase funding for online and telephone resources beyond the additional 2 million pounds ($2.5 million) it’s already pledged during the coronavirus.
“It’s an incredibly dangerous time,” she said.

2020.02.26 15:28 TessaBissolli Meandering in Red's mind, or "Red, in his own words." Part 5: His stories

Over 7 seasons we have accumulated a lot of stories about Red, his personal experiences. True or not together they paint a picture of the character.
Some of them are about his childhood:
A number of his stories have to do with swimming, or fishing:
Stories involve burglars: Bruno Ashmanskis & Mugs Kalinowski
other miscellaneous stories:
Then we have the one of a kind speech to the empty UN:
Mr. Secretary General, Mr. President, distinguished members of the General Assembly [LAUGHS] I come before you on the 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights - Now my bed don't weigh the same - Humbled to be the latest in a long line of politically questionable, formerly dashing strong men to address this hallowed hall. Castro, Gadhafi, and my personal favorite Ah, Nikita. You may have helped the Soviet Union lose the Cold War But you did it in style.
Today, I want to bring to your attention a topic of great interest to me and I believe to anyone who cares about this revered institution, Cary Grant, or, specifically, his acid trips. Through five marriages, numerous lovers, allegedly both male and female, and over 70 films, including "North by Northwest," arguably the greatest work ever produced here, he just kept right on tripping, and why not? Before LSD was weighed down by the counter-cultural baggage of Timothy Leary turning on, tuning in, and dropping out, LSD was used to treat addiction, anxiety, and depression. Standing here in the heart of an institution dedicated to diplomacy, I can say, from personal experience, LSD has made me significantly more enlightened, kind, considerate, and loving, and if people are more kind and loving, then the world will be, too. There will be less crime, fewer acts of terror, more joy, more diplomacy, and far more fun.
Cary Grant once said after a particularly evocative LSD trip, "I imagined myself as a giant penis launching off from Earth - "like a spaceship."
A number of stories have references to being imprisoned:
[NOTE from wikipedia]: Phonthong Prison, known as the ‘Foreigners Prison’, is a mixed sex prison near Vientiane. The prison is used to hold non-Laotian prisoners. Prison conditions are poor. Prison cells measuring about sixteen square metres are used to hold up to six inmates. Rations consist of two bowls of pig fat water soup and sticky rice per cell per day. According to former prisoner Kay Danes, prisoners are regularly tortured using techniques including mock executions, beatings and waterboarding, and some prisoners have had their genitals burned
A number of stories have to do with people he knew:
With all these stories, it is hard not to feel that whatever his real name is, as u/jayt00212 says, we KNOW who he is.

Etre ouverte a toute sorte d'experiance ''douloureuse''.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________
To put it simply, I like playing with my partner's navel and I would like to find a person who is not afraid. Yes its a fetishism and yes I like that my partner has fun with my navel. I like to caress and play with the body of women, if you like being at the mercy of a man who likes to make you cum, brought your toys.
I'm looking for a submissive, fuck friend to fulfill some fantasy. Being open to all kinds of "painful" experiences. Having a belly button fetish is an advantage. If not I would be happy to teach you. If you are interested.
I am from Quebec from the village of Saint-Liboire and can move to the neighboring city (St-Hyacinthe, Drummondville, Acton vale, exc.). For occasional fun, but also available for other experiences. I am open to your ideas. Who's what can happen.

2020.02.10 02:11 Shagrrotten I Don’t Want to Be the Strong Female Lead by Brit Marling

I thought this was a fascinating article from Marling, in the New York Times, who I think is a great talent. I’m still pissed at Netflix for not renewing her show The OA for a third season just as it was about to get even more bonkers. Anyway, this is a terrific piece and it should start some conversation, so here we go!
In pop culture, women are often objectified and disposed of. But even when we’re not being victimized, the alternative leaves much to be desired.
By Brit Marling Ms. Marling is a filmmaker. Feb. 7, 2020
I moved to Los Angeles to become an actress at 24. These are character descriptions of roles I have read for: “thin, attractive, Dave’s wife”; “robot girl, a remarkable feat of engineering”; “her breasts are large and she’s wearing a red sweater.”
I stuffed my bra for that last one. I still did not get the part.
After a while it was hard to tell what was the greater source of my depression: that I could not book a part in a horror film where I had three lines and died on Page 4, or that I was even auditioning to play these roles at all. After dozens of auditions and zero callbacks, my mom suggested I get breast implants. From her perspective, I had walked away from a coveted job at Goldman Sachs and chosen a profession of self-commodification. She wanted to help me sell better.
But I wasn’t drawn to acting because I wanted to be desired. I was drawn to acting because I felt it would allow me to become the whole, embodied person I remembered being in childhood — one that could imagine freely, listen deeply and feel wholeheartedly.
I continued to audition and continued to fail. My depression deepened. My self-esteem plummeted. My boyfriend would get drunk and punch holes in the wall next to my head. I let him. He spat in my face. I let him. He dissolved into tears in my arms. I let him. And then I sifted through the ashes of his anger and his father’s anger before him to help him uncover the forgiveness he needed to move on. I was auditioning to be “Dave’s wife.” I was “robot girl, a remarkable feat of engineering.”
After a day of running from men with chain saws in audition rooms and a night of running from the man I shared a bed with, I decided I was done auditioning. I felt I had to write my way out of these roles or I wouldn’t find my way in the real world, either. I could not be what I could not see onscreen.
So I went to the library in downtown Los Angeles and started reading books and watching films about how to write dramas for the screen. I clung to Jodie Foster in Jonathan Demme’s “Silence of the Lambs,” to Holly Hunter in Jane Campion’s “The Piano.”
But aside from a handful of exceptions, I was overwhelmed by the number of dramatic narratives that murdered their female characters.
In “The Big Heat” she has a pot of boiling coffee thrown in her face and is then shot in the back. In “Chinatown” the bullet tears through her brain and out her eye. And in case this seems like a trend of the past, consider the more recent noir “Blade Runner 2049,” where the holographic femme fatale is deleted and the remaining women are stabbed, drowned and gutted like a fish.
Even the spirited Antigone, the brave Joan of Arc and the unfettered Thelma and Louise meet tragic ends in large part because they are spirited, brave and unfettered. They can defy kings, refuse beauty and defend themselves against violence. But it’s challenging for a writer to imagine a world in which such free women can exist without brutal consequences.
We live in a world that is a direct reflection of these stories we’ve been telling. Close to four women a day are murdered in America at the hands of their partners or former partners. One out of every four women in America has been the victim of a rape.
I am one of those one out of four. Our narratives tell us that women are objects and objects are disposable, so we are always objectified and often disposed of.
There are centuries of trial and error inside the “hero’s journey,” in which a young man is called to adventure, challenged by trials, faces a climactic battle and emerges victorious, changed and a hero. And while there are narrative patterns for the adventures of girls — “Alice in Wonderland,” “The Wizard of Oz” — those are few and far between, and for adult women, even less so.
Even when I found myself writing stories about women rebelling against the patriarchy, it still felt like what I largely ended up describing was the confines of patriarchy. The more fettered I felt inside the real world, the more I turned toward science fiction, speculative fiction and lo-fi fantasy.
I eventually co-wrote, produced and starred in two microbudget films, “Another Earth” and “Sound of My Voice.” Both stories left reality just far enough behind to give me the mental freedom to imagine female characters behaving in ways not often seen onscreen.
I emerged from the Sundance Film Festival with offers to act in projects I would never have been allowed to read for a week prior. Most of those roles were still girlfriend, mistress, mother. But there was a new character on offer to me as well, one that survived the story.
Enter, stage right: the Strong Female Lead.
She’s an assassin, a spy, a soldier, a superhero, a C.E.O. She can make a wound compress out of a maxi pad while on the lam. She’s got MacGyver’s resourcefulness but looks better in a tank top.
Acting the part of the Strong Female Lead changed both who I was and what I thought I was capable of. Training to do my own stunt work made me feel formidable and respected on set. Playing scenes where I was the boss firing men tasted like empowerment. And it will always feel better to be holding the gun in the scene than to be pleading for your life at the other end of the barrel.
It would be hard to deny that there is nutrition to be drawn from any narrative that gives women agency and voice in a world where they are most often without both. But the more I acted the Strong Female Lead, the more I became aware of the narrow specificity of the characters’ strengths — physical prowess, linear ambition, focused rationality. Masculine modalities of power.
I thought back to the films I watched and stories I read burrowed deep in the stacks of the library. I began to see something deeper and more insidious behind all those images of dead and dying women.
When we kill women in our stories, we aren’t just annihilating female gendered bodies. We are annihilating the feminine as a force wherever it resides — in women, in men, of the natural world. Because what we really mean when we say we want strong female leads is: “Give me a man but in the body of a woman I still want to see naked.”
It’s difficult for us to imagine femininity itself — empathy, vulnerability, listening — as strong. When I look at the world our stories have helped us envision and then erect, these are the very qualities that have been vanquished in favor of an overwrought masculinity.
I’ve played the Strong Female Lead in real life, too — as an analyst at an investment bank before coming to Hollywood. I wore suits, drank Scotch neat and talked about the women and the men I was sleeping with like commodities on an open market. I buried my feminine intelligence alive in order to survive. I excelled at my linear task of making more money from a lot of money regardless of the long-term consequences for others and the environment.
The lone female V.P. on my floor and my mentor at the time gave me the following advice when she left to partner at a hedge fund: Once a week, open the door to your office when they finally give you one, and place a phone call where you shout a string of expletives in a threatening voice.
She added that there doesn’t actually need to be someone on the other end of the line.
I don’t believe the feminine is sublime and the masculine is horrifying. I believe both are valuable, essential, powerful. But we have maligned one, venerated the other, and fallen into exaggerated performances of both that cause harm to all. How do we restore balance? Or how do we evolve beyond the limitations that binaries like feminine/masculine present in the first place?
In 2014 I went back to the library and encountered Octavia Butler’s “Parable of the Sower,” a sci-fi novel written in 1993 imagining a 2020 where society has largely collapsed from climate change and growing wealth inequality. Butler’s heroine, the 17 year-old Lauren, has “hyperempathy” — she feels, quite literally, other people’s pain. This feminine gift and curse uniquely prepares her to survive the violent attack on her community in Los Angeles and successfully encourage a small tribe north to begin again from seeds she has saved from her family’s garden.
Butler felt to me like a lighthouse blinking from an island of understanding way out at sea. I had no idea how to get there, but I knew she had found something life saving. She had found a form of resistance.
Butler and other writers like Ursula Le Guin, Toni Morrison and Margaret Atwood did not employ speculative fiction to colonize other planets, enslave new life-forms, or extract alien minerals for capital gains only to have them taken at gunpoint by A.I. robots. These women used the tenets of genre to reveal the injustices of the present and imagine our evolution.
With these ideas in mind, Zal Batmanglij and I wrote and created “The OA,” a Netflix series about Prairie, a blind girl who is kidnapped and returns seven years later to the community she grew up in with her sight restored. She opens up to a group of lost teenage boys in her neighborhood, telling them about her captivity and the inter-dimensional travel she discovered to survive it. It turns out these boys need to hear Prairie’s story as much as she needs to tell it. For the boys face their own kind of captivity: growing up inside the increasingly toxic obligations of American manhood.
As time has passed, I’ve come to understand what deep influence shaping a narrative has. Stories inspire our actions. They frame for us existences that are and are not possible, delineate tracks we can or cannot travel. They choose who we can find empathy for and who we cannot. What we have fellow feeling for, we protect. What we objectify and commodify, we eventually destroy.
I don’t want to be the dead girl, or Dave’s wife. But I don’t want to be a strong female lead either, if my power is defined largely by violence and domination, conquest and colonization.
Sometimes I get a feeling of what she could be like. A truly free woman. But when I try to fit her into the hero’s journey she recedes from the picture like a mirage. She says to me: Brit, the hero’s journey is centuries of narrative precedent written by men to mythologize men. Its pattern is inciting incident, rising tension, explosive climax and denouement. What does that remind you of?
And I say, a male orgasm.
And she says: Correct. I love the arc of male pleasure. But how could you bring me into being if I must satisfy the choreography of his desire only?
And I say: Good on you. But then how do I bring you into being?
Then I hear only silence.
But even in the silence I dream of answers. I imagine new structures and mythologies born from the choreography of female bodies, non-gendered bodies, bodies of color, disabled bodies. I imagine excavating my own desires, wants and needs, which I have buried so deeply to meet the desires, wants and needs of men around me that I’m not yet sure how my own desire would power the protagonist of a narrative.
These are not yet solutions. But they are places to dig.
Excavating, teaching and celebrating the feminine through stories is, inside our climate emergency, a matter of human survival. The moment we start imagining a new world and sharing it with one another through story is the moment that new world may actually come.

{DISCUSSION} How the vampire became film’s most feminist monster
How the vampire became film’s most feminist monster
by Genevieve Valentine
The Vampire was slated in old folklore as primarily a masculine threat, in modern times the Vampire has become a powerful feminist monster
“What do you see in my eyes?” “Death.”
—from 1936’s Dracula’s Daughter
The image of the cinematic vampire femme fatale is so ubiquitous, it’s strange to think that Dracula’s Daughter, its earliest iteration, was the only one of its kind for a generation. It becomes markedly less strange, though, when these characters are seen as dots on a timeline, with a rise in cinematic vampire women paralleling changing social attitudes about feminism. What easier form is there for an ambitious woman than a monster, and what better way to subvert derogatory attitudes then by making them infinitely powerful and alluring?
Dracula’s Daughter arrived at Universal in 1936, an unwanted stepchild of its horror family, more famous for an absence of Bela Lugosi than the presence of anything in particular. Studio disillusionment was palpable in the way it was sold: The trailer halfheartedly promised, “More exciting than DRACULA,” with the exclamation point sheepishly excised. But the film offered images that became a blueprint: Contessa Marya Zaleska (Gloria Holden) is a woman of preternatural self-possession, with intellect and powers above those of mortal men. She also trends toward the Sapphic—a poster warned, “Save the Women of London from Dracula’s Daughter!”
The film itself, though with fewer Gothic thrills than its predecessor, is buoyed by a focus on the psychology of its namesake, inviting feminist interpretations. Zaleska—who keeps a manservant to clean blood off her evening cloak, and bends others to her will almost as an afterthought—longs for independence from Dracula’s ways, burning his body in hopes of shaking the family legacy:
“Free to live as a woman,” she vividly imagines, “free to take my place in the bright world of the living!” She even hopes psychiatry can cure her, though it takes only one fetchingly aimless young woman to push Zaleska off the wagon. And smarmy Dr. Garth (Otto Kruger) soon discovers her powers easily overcome the male condescensions of science. The only thing stronger than Zaleska… is death. (Exclamation point sheepishly excised.)

The movie underperformed, and ended up being the last of Universal’s initial run of classic-monster movies, but Zaleska—longing to escape from patriarchal obligations—became the first onscreen vampire with a feminist agenda. Appearing less than a generation after American suffrage, a mere eight years after full U.K. suffrage, and three years before Countess Zaleska could have voted in Romania, that’s no small feat.
Vampirism is a charmingly reliable metaphor for a particular brand of cinematic feminism. There’s no more economical embodiment of the powerful woman as both terrifyingly predatory and soothingly seductive.
Whether it’s Hammer’s chemised pin-ups or hyper-stylish Miriam Blaylock in The Hunger, tucking desiccated conquests out of guests’ sight, the vampiric woman reflects both the horror premise that a powerful woman is a direct threat—a literal bloodsucker, out for domination—and the fantasy premise that even if a woman who casts no reflection is out to kill you, she’ll still take the time to look her best. And as the cultural discussions around feminism shift, so too do onscreen portrayals of vampire women.
The transformative nature of vampirism, and the autonomy that comes with it, is crucial. Dracula had his captive brides, but usually, the lady vampire is an active, independent figure in her narrative; she holds the frame with that force of will. Vampirism in film is largely its own occupation—cinematic vampires are consumed with the hunt for blood, the search for love, or the nature of immortality itself.
A female vampire is, by default, a career woman. She might not always be elite (as with the blue-collar vampires of Near Dark), but vampirism provides her both goals and resources—a powerfully feminist combination. It also suggests freedom from prescribed sexual and social mores, a narrative pulp culture has never hesitated to explore.
Though some filmmakers (like Jean Rollin) explored this connection through original mythology, many drew on foolproof source material. Sheridan Le Fanu’s 1872 novel Carmilla is a playground of psychosexual Gothic tropes, including a lesbian vampire whose desire for a milquetoast ingenue eventually blows her cover.
Carmilla is a mysterious firebrand perfectly suited to cinema about women’s taboo appetites. Roger Vadim adapted it as the surreal, slightly straightwashed baroque feature Blood And Roses, but perhaps the most familiar exploration is 1970’s The Vampire Lovers. A more-faithful-than-expected Hammer adaptation of Carmilla, it follows enigmatic Carmilla (frequent Hammer star Ingrid Pitt) as she ingratiates herself with virgins of the country gentry, drawing them away from fiancés and fathers, and putting them under her influence. With Carmilla seducing victims in a very literal sense, that influence is largely erotic, to nobody’s surprise: the source material is Sapphic, the studio is Hammer, and the gaze of the lens is male.
https://preview.redd.it/h92on4zf67a41.png?width=1280&format=png&auto=webp&s=3b453ccf8e1545ba1c54c8facfc9b6b084830e25
But Carmilla’s intent reads as something other than mere lust, bloody or otherwise. Pitt’s cool-eyed dismissal of men’s opinions repeatedly swamps the frame—the real warning sign, the movie suggests, of her evil.
In the soft-focus, softcore Hammer wonderland, intimate moments with her familiars are framed as enthusiastic love scenes or as bittersweet struggle. Carmilla is tempted to kill the girl she loves—at the psychic behest of the horseman who haunts her steps, which only underscores hatred of men as the major conflict.
Coming in the midst of second-wave feminist discussions of sexual freedom as crucial to an independent life, women’s eagerness to keep Carmilla’s company suggests a mirror to political lesbianism, the movement that emerged within the second movement in which activists were encouraged to disown men altogether, regardless of sexual orientation.
All three of Carmilla’s targets abandon men’s attentions in Carmilla’s favor. In that light, the film hints at a campy undead female solidarity. (The film beat the cult honeymoon-disaster tone-poem Daughters Of Darkness to the post by a year: Daughters also had the subtext of sisterhood at the expense of men, with vampire Elizabeth Bathory attempting to rescue a newlywed from the clutches of her abusive husband.)
The lustful-vampire sisterhood quickly became one of horror’s most popular low-budget tropes. It got a particularly explicit narrative in 1974’s Vampyres, which is more concerned with the sex life of its lesbian couple than any vampire lore. But even that movie claims as its most uncanny moment a post-coital male victim awakening to find seductress Fran (Marianne Morris) watching him with unblinking eyes, an inversion of the usual sexual gaze—both his and the camera’s.
And in Tony Scott’s The Hunger, one of cinema’s most stylish takes on the female vampire, Miriam (Catherine Deneuve) sets aside David Bowie himself in favor of the more modern Dr. Sarah (Susan Sarandon)—who decides she wants nothing to do with the lifestyle to which Miriam’s consigned her. Though Scott’s original ending left it ambiguous whether anyone survived, MGM insisted on an epilogue that showed Sarah making the most of the luxe afterlife, with Miriam a half-living specter of her past.
https://preview.redd.it/2pw8oqgi67a41.png?width=1233&format=png&auto=webp&s=4ce98f5320062eecea56c25a524f667a34fba00e
Reportedly, neither Scott nor Sarandon approved of the ending, seeing it as too neat a finish for a story suffused with the visual entropy of addiction. But it was the beginning of a new era for the vampire femme fatale—one who sought to examine and understand her nature, and who often rejected her expected role, or asked the audience to reject their expectations. These were Dracula’s granddaughters.
Some of the most deliberate deconstructions of the vampire woman are those that actively engage with the supposed eroticism of the familiar image, turning it into an element of horror. In Interview With The Vampire, Neil Jordan uses Claudia’s immortal ennui as currency, trading on the unsettling imagery of Kirsten Dunst growing up and getting wise when the men around her didn’t want her to.
Claudia becomes keenly observant and bitter about her forced girlhood, killing the man who kept her in girls’ dresses, and claiming his partner as her lover in a scene staged as near-religious iconography, designed to raise questions about the sexual expectations placed on women in a man’s world. (It’s the same monstrous-girl taboo that became the linchpin of the moody, understated Let the Right One In.) However, in an age of debate about sex positivity and its portrayals in popular culture, Jordan himself returned to the unerotic identity in Byzantium, in which Gemma Arterton’s sexuality-as-performance in skintight dresses and thick eyeliner are shot with such asexual detachment, they take on the the wildlife-documentary dread of an insect luring a meal.
Feminism has become so powerfully entwined with the pop-culture image of the woman vampire that it’s possible to remove the signifiers of vampirism and maintain a perfectly recognizable vampire narrative. Park Chan-wook followed up Thirst (in which a female vampire is ruthless beyond death) with the Connecticut Gothic masterpiece Stoker. The pitch-black comedy centers on the uncanny, incestuous, uncomfortably-erotic exchange of power between young India (played with exhausting alertness by Mia Wasikowska) and her sociopathic uncle Charlie (Matthew Goode), who comes to town with a seductive fixation on India, just as the maternal figures in her life start mysteriously disappearing.
India is initially seduced by his interest, but soon she discovers her real interest is in her own potential for destruction instead. (Even her primary sexual experience is masturbation—this is a young woman decisively realizing codependence doesn’t suit her.) In her triumphant moment, she eclipses her male influencer, accepts her appetite for death, and learns at last to protect the women of the family—all without a fang in sight.
https://preview.redd.it/rllrls3l67a41.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=cc3f2314fa53bfd79fbcff3450f655db77d70e1d
The bloodless vampire is more the exception than the rule, of course. The genre still eagerly returns to some common signifiers, even after the pulp taboo has lost its thrill: the enigmatic calmness, the subtle effects on the natural world, the gleaming blood, the supernaturally pale skin.
(There’s feminist subtext to be found in movies featuring vampires of color—Hollywood has doled out N’Bushe Wright’s Dr. Karen Jenson, whose vampiric limbo in Blade rallies her to the cause, Lucy Liu’s vengeful Sadie in the D-movie Rise: Blood Hunter, and more recently the Girl from A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night—but largely, cinematic vampirism is still a white woman’s game.) 2014’s Only Lovers Left Alive centers a quietly feminist vampire that embodies all these qualities: Eve (Tilda Swinton), a bohemian dilettante with the calm mien of long and unquestioned autonomy. Even her thirst is easily satisfied with bagged blood, with hunting as a last-ditch option; she’s a rare glimpse of the vampire with nothing left to rebel against.
It’s noteworthy, then, that A Girl Walks Home Alone At Night was also released in 2014. Its nameless vampire girl (Sheila Vand) is stranded in Iran’s mythical Bad City, a positively misandrist edge-of-the-wilderness town ringed by a ditch of men’s corpses. Within its cultural context, the Girl stalking the night and eliminating men who threaten women is such a feminist character that she doesn’t even need a name.
Her very presence is vengeance against violent men (mistreating a woman—or suggesting the intent to—is a one-way ticket), and the vampire is just the form in which that social resentment has been most recognizably made flesh. Women still can’t safely walking home alone at night. The vampire-girl signals her supernatural nature simply by her fearlessness.
https://preview.redd.it/bfb78lwm67a41.png?width=640&format=png&auto=webp&s=c7bb11596dc23fd4875800b53fbfaf806530ad75
It’s striking to realize that the Girl and Eve would hardly recognize each other if they met. They’re two of Dracula’s daughters who have split markedly far from that matriarch of the family tree. The breadth of the trope visible between them feels like the fulfillment of Le Fanu’s haunting Carmilla conclusion: “…to this hour the image of Carmilla returns to memory with ambiguous alternations—sometimes the playful, languid, beautiful girl; sometimes the writhing fiend I saw in the ruined church; and often from a reverie I have started, fancying I heard the light step of Carmilla at the drawing-room door.”
That’s the nature of any cinematic idea that so directly reflects its cultural climate. In these films, the changing nature of these vampires mirrors the promise that women will be what they must be to survive.

2019.12.09 09:16 UnceasingPoeming [Spoilers] Branwen Name Theory, and other speculation

First off, I'll admit much of this is tenuous. But because searching the sub for previous mentions of it found nothing I'm just gonna put it on the record. First I'll focus on the name Branwen and draw some reasonable comparisons, then I'll go off the rails with other stuff. I do slightly touch on the namesakes of Robyn Hill and Clover, and some character stuff for Cinder and Neo, but this is mainly about the twins.
It hasn't been mentioned before, but both Qrow and Raven have some character similarities to portrayals of the middle-ages fictional character Rowena. It also feels like it has about the same amount of fantasy name-alteration as for other character names that are related to color rather than myth, so it sneaks up on you but feels obvious in hindsight. Wikipedia calls Rowena a "femme fatale", but portrayal of the characters are varied. Fitting various takes on a character into a family tree is a bit much, but what stuck out to me was the treacherous stepmother who was the inspiration for Morgan Le Fay and an honorable and innocent love interest. The Rowena in a story that helped reshape the public image of Robin Hood is a good start.
I found out about Rowena when looking into the character of Robin Hood brought me to the legend-defining 1819 story Ivanhoe. This is a medieval historical novel that was part of the first big wave of portraying Robin as heroic rather than a criminal scoundrel. The story uses a lot of the stock legendary characters popular in the period. Its main character isn't Robin Locksley either, but the Wikipedia page got me interested in the story's romance, Rowena. In Ivanhoe, Rowena isn't all that interesting compared to other stock characters that include King Richard (undercover as the Black Knight), but the mental image of Qrow as a damsel in a Robin Hood tale is a good one.
Prediction: Some folks are misreading Qrow's rapport with Clover Ebi as romantic. Robyn and Qrow's namesakes share an old romance though they weren't partners in it, but a fluffy relationship between the two with Robyn as the more upstanding one and Qrow as awkward while turning over a new leaf fits the tone of RWBY. Robyn Hill having a Maid Marian for a love interest is way more obvious than RWBY's normal approach, but a slow build over multiple volumes as she works alongside Qrow would work well. Expect a lot of surprises with Atlas and Mantle's crumbling power structure, or even Atlas Academy, leaving Robyn in an important ongoing role with Qrow as trusted backup. Clover Ebi's inspiration the fable A Fisherman's Good Luck is about patience having a reward, but his role in Qrow's current character arc could just as well be a friend or wingman. Clover does seem pretty fabulous though.
On the more villainous side, we have a predecessor of the character Morgan le Fay. This version of Rowena is a potions-using usurper. The treachery of early portrayals of Rowena such as a wicked stepmother usurper are a good fit with the much more complex character of Raven Branwen. Raven isn't a Morgan Le Fay sort of sorceress though she does have some of the style. Even if Raven isn't anyone's stepmother, she's a painfully twisted mother if not a wicked one. Remember, Raven pillages and leaves innocents to die. This doesn't give any new insight into her interactions with Yang, but I think that relationship has been decently fleshed out already and simply followed from the circumstances up to that meeting.
Prediction: Later on if we see Raven interact with Ruby it'll be harsh, while still similar to how Qrow acts. This may be in a training mentor for team RWBY, or as a story arc villain, but the interactions will be antagonistic. Raven is Rubys sister's mother, even if she isn't wicked, and close enough to a stepmother. Imagine how tough a bandit queen is as a combat teacher, and this would give us insight into how ruthlessly the Branwen tribe trains in a natural way. Assuming the recent Bees scenes aren't just playing with the audience, maybe Raven is going to become a Wicked Mother-In-Law.
Bonus off-the-rails-and-careening-through-trees material:
Anyone else have some favorite plot theories that you've got sparse evidence for?

2019.12.08 08:11 kahalili A compilation of the weird shit men have said to me online between the age of 11 and now (19). (It’s a L O N G one)

Got on the topic of being a girl online on feemagers and these memories hit me like a truck.
[edit] wow. I’ve been one fucking oblivious kid
————————————————-
Used to go on a teen chat room (13-18) when I was 11. I just checked the “yes I’m 13” box and liked going there bc I was lonely. My name was literally [name]cat11 (bc I was obsessed with warrior cats and was 11). Sooooo many stories of 11 year old me being in insanely creepy and/or predatory conversations and not realizing how bad it was because I absolutely loved all the attention I was getting. Like seriously I look back at this and I’m like “holy shit how did I not yeet the fuck out of there”. Here’s a few that I remember:
-The guy who asked if I wanted to be his kitty, I said yes and he said he’d pass me around and share me with all his friends. He asked what would happen if he and his friends started picking up my tail and poking my butt, I thought it was funny and told a 14 y/o girl I was talking to on their and she told me to block him
——————————————— Outside of that chat room:
I was having a discussion ab how you actually should wear socks with ur boots bc not doing so makes ur feet and boots smell (again my username included my first name, a girls name) and not one but two dudes DMed me to ask what kind of boots I had, for pics of them, whether my boots smell, whether they’ve ever smelled, for feet pics, etc.
————————————————-
I played online monopoly, had my (obviously girl’s) name in my username. The dudes were fighting over the chat about whose gf I would be.
————————————————-
16 years old. Playing words with friends with some random strangers. Older dude dms me “are you a hairy girl ;)” and I said “I don’t appreciate that.” He said “no? What are you here for then” and I said “scrabble.”
————————————————-
Oh once I posted on whisper (didn’t realize how bad it was yet) about how I was nervous for a French placement test. (I was 17) So a guy dmed me in French asking for pics of me to jack off too. He asked for a pic, I said no and the convo went
(Darn, I was hoping to masturbate and look at you)
c’est bizarre dude. Utilises Google.
(That’s weird dude. Use google)
(No I prefer interactions with pretty girls) [ya this bitch really said no to my no)
(Honestly idk how to respond to that)
avec une photo de toi? ;)
(With a pic of you? ;) )
————————————————-
17 years old, I was playing fortnite duos. Mics on. My partners a guy, we start playing normally. He tells me girls shouldn’t swear. Then he teases me for being bad at the game cuz I’m a girl. Then he tells me my voice is really hot. Then he asks what I would do if he started jacking off and I left the game.
————————————————-
Barely 18 years old, posted on whisper how I hated running before and after I ran but while I was doing it it felt great. (Bc come on, it wasn’t sexual so they couldn’t turn that around, right? wrong). Flooded with DMs about if I want a sugar daddy, what bra size I am, am I interested in “Big Black Cock”, for pics and Snapchat usernames, people saying they’d love to fuck me while I was sweaty, etc.

2019.11.10 02:47 MarleyEngvall wady urtâs has been created

By E. E. Cummings XI. JEAN LE NÈGRE (i.) ON a certain day, the ringing of the bell and accom- panying rush of men to the window facing the entrance gate was supplemented by an unparalleled volley of en- thusiastic exclamations in all the languages of La Ferté Macé——provoking in me a certainty that the queen of fair women had arrived. This certainly thrillingly with- ered when I heard the cry: 'Il y a un noir!' Fritz was at the best peep-hole, resisting successfully the onslaughts of a dozen fellow-prisoners, and of him I demanded in Eng- lish, 'Who's come?'——'Oh, a lot of girls,' he yelled, 'and there's a NIGGER too'——hereupon writhing with laugh- ter. I attempted to get a look, but in vain; for by this at least two dozen men were at the peep-hole, fighting and gesticulating and slapping each other's backs with joy. However, my curiosity was not long in being answered. I heard on the stairs the sound of mounting feet, and knew that a couple of plantons would before many minutes arrive at the door with their new prey. So did everyone else——and from the farthest beds uncouth figures sprang and rushed to the door, eager for the first glimpse of the nouveau: which was very significant, as the ordinary procedure on arrival of prisoners was for everybody to rush to his own bed and stand guard over it. Even as the plantons fumbled with the locks I heard the inimitable, unmistakable divine laugh of a negro. The door opened at last. Entered a beautiful pillar of black strutting muscle topped with a tremendous display of the whitest teeth on earth. The muscle bowed politely in our direction, the grin remarked musically; 'Bo'jour, tou'l'monde'; then came a cascade of laughter. Its effect on the spectators was instantaneous: they roared and danced with joy. 'Comment vous appelez-vous?' was fired from the hubbub.——'J'm'appelle Jean, moi,' the muscle rapidly answered with sudden solemnity, proudly gazing to left and right as if expecting a challenge to this state- ment: but when none appeared, it relapsed as suddenly into laughter——as if hugely amused at itself and everyone else including a little and tough boy, whom I had not pre- viously noted, although his entrance had coincided with the muscle's. Thus into the misère of La Ferté Macé stepped lightly and proudly Jean Le Nègre. Of all the fine people in La Ferté, Monsieur Jean ('le noir' as he was entitled by his enemies) swaggers in my memory as the finest. Jean's first act was to complete the distribution (begun, he announced, among the plantons who had escorted him upstairs) of two pockets full of Cubebs. Right and left he gave them up to the last, remarkably carelessly, 'J'ne veux, moi.' Après la soupe (which occurred a few minutes after le noir's entry) B. and I and the greater number of pris- oners descended to the cour for our afternoon promenade. The cook spotted us immediately, and desired us to 'catch water; which we did, three cartfulls of it, earning our usual café sucré. On quitting the cuisine after this deli- cious repast (which as usual mitigated somewhat the effects of the swill that was our official nourishment) we entered the cour. And we noticed at once a well-made figure standing conspicuously by itself, and poring with extraordinary intentness over the pages of a London Daily Mail which it was holding upside-down. The reader was culling choice bits of news of a highly sensational na- ture, and exclaiming from time to time——'Est-ce vrai! Quelque chose!—— Comment? La reine aussi? Bon Dieu! Qu'est-ce que c'est? ——Mon père est mort! Merde!——Eh, b'en! La guerre est fini. Bon.'——It was Jean Le Nègre, playing a little game with himself to beguile the time. When he had mounted à la chambre, two or three tried to talk with this extraordinary personage in French; at which he became very superior and announced: 'J'suis anglais, moi. Parlez anglais. Comprends pas français, moi.' At this a crowd escorted him over to B. and me——antici- pating great deeds in the English language. Jean looked at us critically and said, 'Vous parlez anglais? Moi parlez anglais.'——'We are Americans, and speak English,' I an- swered.——'Moi anglais,' Jean said. 'Mon père, capitaine de gendarmerie, Londres. Comprends pas français, moi. SPEE-Kingliss'——he laughed all over himself. At this display of English on Jean's part the English- speaking Hollanders began laughing. 'The son of a bitch is crazy,' one said. And from that moment B. and I got on famously with Jean. His mind was a child's. His use of language was some- times exalted fibbing, sometimes the purely picturesque. He courted above all the sound of words, more or less disdaining their meaning. He told us immediately (in pidgin-French) that he was born without a mother be- cause his mother died when he was born, that his father was (first) sixteen (then) sixty years old, that his father gagnait cinq cent francs par jour (later, par année), that he was born in London and not in England, that he was in the French army and had never been in any army. He did not, however, contradict himself in one state- ment: 'Les français sont des cochons'——to which we heart- ily agreed, and which won him the approval of the Hollanders. The next day I had my hands full acting as interpreter for 'le noir qui comprend pas français.' I was summoned from the cour to elucidate a great grief which Jean had been unable to explain to the Gestionnaire. I mounted with a planton to find Jean in hysterics; speechless; his eyes staring out of his head. As nearly as I could make out, Jean had had sixty francs when he arrived, which money he had given to a planton upon his arrival, the planton having told Jean that he would deposit the money with the Gestionnaire in Jean's name (Jean could not write). The planton in question, who looked particularly innocent, denied this charge upon my explaining Jean's version; while the Gestionnaire puffed and grumbled, dis- claiming any connection with the alleged theft and pro- testing sonorously that he was hearing about Jean's sixty francs for the first time. The Gestionnaire shook his thick piggish finger at the book wherein all financial trans- actions were to be found——from the year one to the pres- ent year, month, day, hour and minute (or words to that effect). 'Mais c'est pas là,' he kept repeating stupidly. The Surveillant was uh-ahing at a great rate and attempting to pacify Jean in French. I myself was somewhat fearful for Jean's sanity and highly indignant at the planton. The matter ended with the planton's being sent about his business; simultaneously with Jean's dismissal to the cour, whither I accompanied him. My best efforts to comfort Jean in this matter were quite futile. Like a child who has been unjustly punished he was inconsolable. Great tears welled in his eyes. He kept repeating 'Sees-tee franc ——planton voleur,' and absolutely like a child who in anguish calls itself by the name which has been given itself by grown-ups——'steel Jean munee.' To no avail I called the planton a menteur, a voleur, a fils de chienne and various other names. Jean felt the wrong itself too keenly to be interested in my denunciation of the mere agent through whom injustice had (as it happened) been con- summated. But——again like an inconsolable child who weeps his heart out when no human comfort avails and wakes the next day without an apparent trace of the recent grief—— Jean Le Nègre, in the course of the next twenty-four hours, had completely recovered his normal buoyancy of spirit. The sees-tee franc were gone. A wrong had been done. But that was yesterday. To-day—— And he wandered up and down, joking, laughing, sing- ing: 'après la guerre finis.' . . . In the cour Jean was the mecca of all female eyes. Handkerchiefs were waved to him; phrases of the most amorous nature greeted his every appearance. To all these demonstrations he by no means turned a deaf ear; on the contrary, Jean was irrevocably vain. He boasted of having been enormously popular with the girls wherever he went and of having never disdained their admiration. In Paris one day——(and thus it happened that we discovered why le gouvernement français had arrested Jean)—— One afternoon, having rien à faire, and being flush (owing to his success as a thief, of which vocation he made a great deal, adding as many ciphers to the amounts as fancy dictated) Jean happened to cast his eyes in a store window where were displayed all possible appurte- nances for the militaire. Vanity was rooted deeply in Jean's soul. The uniform of an English captain met his eyes. Without a moment's hesitation he entered the store, bought the entire uniform, including leather puttees and belt (of the latter purchase he was especially proud), and departed. The next store contained a display of medals of all descriptions. It struck Jean at once that a uniform would be incomplete without medals. He entered this store, bought one of every decoration——not forgetting the Colonial, nor yet the Belgian Cross (which on account of its size and colour particularly appealed to him)——and went to his room. There he adjusted the decorations on the chest of his blouse, donned the uniform, and sallied importantly forth to capture Paris. Everywhere he met with success. He was frantically pursued by women of all stations from les putains to les princesses. The police salaamed to him. His arm was wearied by the returning of innumerable salutes. So far did his medals carry him that, although on one occasion a gendarme dared to arrest him for beating in the head of a fellow English officer (who being a mere lieutenant, should not have objected to Captain Jean's stealing the affections of his lady), the sergent de gendarmerie before whom Jean was arraigned on a charge of attempting to kill refused to even hear the evidence, and dismissed the case with profuse apologies to the heroic Captain. '"Le gouverne- ment français, Monsieur, extends to you through me its profound apology for the insult which your honour has received." Ils sont des cochons, les français,' said Jean, and laughed throughout his entire body. Having had the most blue-blooded ladies of the capital cooing upon his heroic chest, having completely beaten up with the full support of the law whosoever of lesser rank attempted to cross his path or refuse him the salute—— having had 'great fun' saluting generals on les grands boulevards and being in turn saluted ('tous les généraux, tous, salute me, Jean have more medal'), and this state of affairs having lasted for about three months——Jean began to be very bored ('me très ennuyé'). A fit of temper ('me très fâché') arising from this ennui led to a rixe with the police, in consequence of which (Jean, though outnum- bered three to one, having almost killed one of his assail- ants) our hero was a second time arrested. This time the authorities went so far as to ask the heroic captain to what branch of the English army he was at present attached; to which Jean first replied, 'Parle pas français, moi,' and immediately after announced that he was a Lord of the Admiralty, that he had committed robberies in Paris to the tune of sees-meel-i-own franc, that he was a son of the Lord Mayor of London by the Queen, that he had lost a leg in Algeria, and that the French were cochons. All of which assertions being duly disproved, Jean was remanded to La Ferté for psychopathic observation and safe keeping on the technical charge of wearing an English officer's uniform. Jean's particular girl at La Ferté was 'LOO-Loo.' With Lulu it was the same as with les princesses in Paris——'me no travaille, ja MAIS. Les femmes travaillent, geev Jean mun-ee, sees, sees-tee, see-cent francs. Jamais travaille, moi.' Lulu smuggle Jean money; and not for soe tme did the woman who slept next Lulu miss it. Lulu also sent Jean a lace embroidered handkerchief, which Jean would squeeze and press to his lips with a beatific smile of perfect contentment. The affair with Lulu kept Mexique and Pete the Hollander busy writing letters; which Jean dictated, rolling his eyes and scratching his head for words. At this time Jean was immensely happy. He was con- tinually playing practical jokes on one of the Hollanders, or Mexique, or the Wanderer, or in fact anyone of whom he was particularly fond. At intervals between these dem- onstrations of irresponsibility (which kept everyone in a state of laughter) he would stride up and down the filth- sprinkled floor with his hands in the pockets of his stylish jacket, singing at the top of his lungs his own version of the famous song of songs: après la guerre fini, soldat anglais parti mademoiselle que je laissai en France avec des pickaninee. PLENTY! and laughing till he shook and had to lean against a wall. B. and Mexique made some dominoes. Jean had not the least idea of how to play, but when we three had gathered for a game he was always to be found leaning over our shoulders, completely absorbed, once in a while offering us sage advice, laughing utterly when some one made a cinque or a multiple thereof. One afternoon, in the interval between la soupe and promenade, Jean was in especially high spirits. I was lying down on my collapsible bed when he came up to my end of the room and began showing off exactly like a child. This time it was a game of l'armée français which Jean was playing.——'Jamais soldat, moi. Connais toute l'armée française.' John the Bathman, stretched comfortably in his bunk near me, grunted. 'Tous,' Jean repeated.——And he stood in front of us; stiff as a stick in imitation of a French lieutenant with an imaginary company in front of him. First he would be the lieutenant giving commands, then he would be the Army executing them. He began with the manual of arms. 'Com-pag-nie . . .' then, as he went through the manual holding his imaginary gun——'htt, htt, htt.'——Then as the officer commending his troops: 'Bon. Très bon. Très bien fait'——laughing with head thrown back and teeth aglitter at his own success. John Le Baigneur was so tremendously amused that he gave up sleeping to watch. L'armée drew a crowd of admirers from every side. For at least three- quarters of an hour this game went on. . . . Another day Jean, being angry at the weather and having eaten a huge amount of soupe, began yelling at the top of his voice 'MERDE à la France,' and laughing heartily. No one paying especial attention to him, he con- tinued (happily in this new game with himself) for about fifteen minutes. Then The Sheeney With The Trick Rain- coat (that undersized specimen, clad in feminne-fitting raiment with flashy shoes), who was by trade a pimp, being about half Jean's height and a tenth of his physique, strolled up to Jean——who had by this time got as far as my bed——and, sticking his sallow face as near Jean's as the neck could reach, said in a solemn voice: 'Il ne faut pas dire ça.' Jean, astounded, gazed at the intruder for a moment; then demanded, 'Qui dit ça? Moi? Jean? Jamais, ja-MAIS. MERDE à la France!' nor would he yield a point, backed up as he was by the moral support of every one present except the Sheeney——who found discretion the better part of valour and retired with a few dark threats; leaving Jean master of the situation and yelling for the Sheeney's particular delectation: 'MAY-RRR-DE à la France!' more loudly than ever. A little after the epic battle with stovepipes between The Young Pole and Bill the Hollander, the wrecked poêle (which was patiently waiting to be repaired) furnished Jean with perhaps his most brilliant inspiration. The final section of pipe (which conducted the smoke through a hole in he wall to the outer air) remained in place all by itself, projecting about six feet into the room at a height of seven or eight feet from the floor. Jean noticed this; got a chair; mounted on it, and by applying alternately his ear and his mouth to the end of the pipe created for himself a telephone, with the aid of which he carried on a conversation with The Wanderer (at that moment visiting his family on the floor below) to this effect: ——Jean, grasping the pipe and speaking angrily into it, being evidently nettled at the poor connection——'Heh- loh, hello, hello, hello'——surveying the pipe in consterna- tion——'Merde. Ça marche pas'——trying again with a deep frown——'heh-LOH!'——tremendously agitated——'HEH- LOH!'——a beatific smile supplanting the frown——'hello Barbu. Est-ce que tu es là? Qui? Bon!'——evincing tre- mendous pleasure at having succeeded in establishing the connction satisfactorily——'Barbu? Est-ce que tu m'écoutes? Qui? Qu'est-ce que c'est Barbu? Comment? Moi? Qui, MOI? JEAN? jaMAIS! jamais, jaMAIS, Barbu. Peut-être c'était Mex- ique'——turning his head in Mexique's direction and roar- ing with laughter——'Hello, HEH-LOH. Barbu? Tu sais, Barbu, j'ai jamais dit ça. Au contraire, Barbu. J'ai dit que vous avez des totos'——another roar of laughter——'Com- ment? C'est pas vrai? Bon. Alors. Qu'est-ce que vous avez, Barbu? Des poux——OHHHHHHHHH. Je comprends. C'est mieux'——shaking with laughter, then suddenly tre- mendously serious——'Hellohellohellohello HEHLOH!'—— addressing the stovepipe——'C'est une mauvaise machine, ça ——speaking into it with the greatest distinctness——'HEL- L-LOH. Barbu? Liberté, Barbu. Oui. Comment? C'est ça. Liberté pour tou'l'monde. Quand? Après la soupe. Oui. Liberté pour tou'l'monde après la soupe!'——to which jest astonishingly reacted a certain old man known as the West Indian Negro (a stocky, credulous creature with whom Jean would have nothing to do, and whose tales of Brooklyn were indeed outclassed by Jean's histoires d'amour) who leaped rheumatically from his paillasse at the word 'Liberté' and rushed limpingly hither and thither inquiring Was it true?——to the enormous and excruciating amusement of The Enormous Room in general. After which Jean, exhausted with laughter, descended from the chair and lay down on his bed to read a letter from Lulu (not knowing a syllable of it). A little later he came rushing up to my bed in the modst terrific state of excitement, the whites of his eyes gleaming, his teeth bared, his kinky hair fairly standing on end, and cried: 'You f—— me, me f—— you? Pas bon. You f——you, me f—— me:——bon. Me f——me, you f——you!' and went away capering and shouting with laughter, dancing with great grace an as great agility and with an imaginary partner the entire length of the room. There was another game——a pure child's game——which Jean played. It was the name game. He amused himself for hours together by lying on his paillasse, tilting his head back, rollling up his eyes, and crying in a high quavering voice——'JAW-neeeeeee.' After a repetitio or two of his own name in English, he would demand sharply 'Qui m'appelle? Mexique? Est-ce que tu m'appelle, Mexique?' and if Mexique happened to be asleep, Jean would rush over and cry in his ear shaking him thoroughly——'Est-ce tu m'appelle, toi?' Or it might be Barbu, or Pete the Hol- lander, or B. or myself, of whom he sternly asked the question——which was always followed by quantities of laughter on Jean's part. He was never perfectly happy unless exercising his inexhaustible imagination. . . . Of all Jean's extraordinary selves, the moral one was at once the most rare and most unreasonable. In the matter of les femmes he could hardly have been accused by his bitterest enemy of being a Puritan. Yet the Puritan streak came out one day, in a discussion which lasted for several hours. Jean, as in the case of France, spoke in dogma. His contention was very simple: 'La femme qui fume n'est pas une femme.' He defended it hotly against the attacks of all the nations represented; in vain did Belgian and Hollander, Russian and Pole, Spaniard and Alsatian, charge and counter-charge——Jean remained unshaken. A woman could do anything but smoke——if she smoked she ceased automatically to be a woman and became some- thing unspeakable. As Jean was at this time sitting alter- nately on B.'s bed and mine, and as the alternations became increasingly frequent as the discussion waxed hotter, we were not sorry when the planton's shout, 'A la promenade les hommes!' scattered the opposing warriors. Then up leaped Jean (who had almost come to blows innumerable times) and rushed laughing to the door, having already forgotten the whole thing. Now we come to the story of Jean's undoing, and may the gods which made Jean Le Nègre give me grace to tell it as it was.

By Arthur G. Staples ON "AMIABILITY AT HOME" USUALLY, husband and wife start out with ev- erything that should go to make up a picnic. They have a tent over their heads, bread and meat and everything fine in their hamper. But they often fail to put into the basket, a touch of that divine salt, known as amiability. Mr. Greeter and Mrs. Greeter——none could be sweeter! He runs a shop and is amiable as a basket of chips when you see him behind the counter. His benevolent face fairly beams as you go into buy his goods. He ripples with tales and runs over with stories. He is what is called "an ever genial." The village newspaper so says, and so saying it must be true. Mrs Greeter goes out to the meetings of the village sewing circle and is the life of the party. But at home! Oh boy! Greeter has worn out his amiability at the store and Mrs. Greeter has worn out hers at the club. The pinch of the "divine salt" is ev- erywhere but in the home-basket. He begins to glower as soon as he locks up the shop. She begins to "hate things" as soon as she unloosens her corsets. He be- gins to "taste bitter" as soon as he smells the supper. She begins to look like a dill pickle as soon as she says "boo!" He has a gift of sarcasm; she has a gift of repartee. He has a power of suggestion and she has a power of seeing the same. He has the art of silence "that speaks louder than words;" she has the power of words that makes silence seem like heaven. He can say things in a look and she can say things by saying them. They have a nice picnic-basket——everything in it from soup to dessert and not a pinch of the stuff that gives it savor——amiability. There are a good many people who are this way. I believe that this writing will touch more than one of my readers where he lives. And it is too bad. It is only a habit and nothing intentional. It would be well if we had schools of amiable domestic science where husbands and wives could be taught the manner of peaceful household life. Amiability is a habit. Un- amiability is a habit. We are not so different from some of the lower animals——the dog, for instance. A dog may be easily ruined in disposition by not being properly educated in being good-natured. He may get to be so bad that he will not even waggle his tail. Some people equally refuse to waggle. Of course, I know that sermonizing is a foolish habit also. I can go about telling people that they all should be amiable at home as they are capable of being in business. Will they? They will not. But maybe some person may feel that if he and his wife and the children could somehow get a sort of understanding; form an Amalgamated Union of Amiables, it surely would add to the joy of living. The home would be as pleasant as the club for that man and that woman and the children might get a pinch of the enduring "divine savor" of life. Of course an amiable man is happy. You can't deny that. If a man is not amiable, he is not happy. If he is an "abused party," he is not happy. If he is cross about something all of the time, he is not happy. If one-half of him is not amiable, he is not happy. If that half is the "better half" so much the worse and yet, again, so much the worse also if the wife be amiable and the husband be the reverse. You must "pass the salt." You must have a well-savored household to be happy. Sometimes one saint in a household will savor it. I have known a household where the people were ordi- narily very "touchy" and far from amiable as to dis- position, but all of them savored by a white-haired saintly woman who never spoke except as in kindness and in a low, sweet voice, and who lived as she spoke. Thus what one puts in the hamper does do some good, if all will partake of it. But O! my! What is the use of having a home where there is nothing but the eternal squabbling; where no one ever waggles; where no one laughs and loves and lives the life of sunshine. What is the use of a household where there is plenty of bread and cheese and no kisses. What is the use of wasting all one's smiles on the customer and none on the partner? Ste- venson called his happiness "a great task." But he did it, in spite of his illness. "If I have faltered," wrote he, "in my great task of happiness; if I have moved among my race and shown no glorious morning face; if beams from happy human eyes have moved me not; if morning skies, books and my food and summer rain have knocked at my sullen heart in vain, Lord, thy most pointed pleasure take and stab my spirit broad awake."

Professor Pileni's Resignation as Editor-in-Chief of the Open Chemical Physics Journal: an open letter from Dr. Niels Harrit
After the paper entitled "Active Thermitic Material Discovered in Dust from the 9/11 World Trade Center Catastrophe," which I along with eight colleagues co-authored, was published in the Open Chemical Physics Journal, its editor-in-chief, Professor Marie-Paule Pileni, abruptly resigned. It has been suggested that this resignation casts doubt on the scientific soundness of our paper.
However, Professor Pileni did the only thing she could do, if she wanted to save her career. After resigning, she did not criticize our paper. Rather, she said that she could not read and evaluate it, because, she claimed, it lies outside the areas of her expertise.
But that is not true, as shown by information contained on her own website. Her List of Publications reveals that Professor Pileni has published hundreds of articles in the field of nanoscience and nanotechnology. She is, in fact, recognized as one of the leaders in the field. Her statement about her "major advanced research" points out that, already by 2003, she was "the 25th highest cited scientist on nanotechnology".
Since the late 1980s, moreover, she has served as a consultant for the French Army and other military institutions. From 1990 to 1994, for example, she served as a consultant for the Société Nationale des Poudres et Explosifs (National Society for Powders and Explosives).
She could, therefore, have easily read our paper, and she surely did. But by denying that she had read it, she avoided the question that would have inevitably been put to her: "What do you think of it?"
Faced with that question, she would have had two options. She could have criticized it, but that would have been difficult without inventing some artificial criticism, which she as a good scientist with an excellent reputation surely would not have wanted to do. The only other option would have been to acknowledge the soundness of our work and its conclusions. But this would have threatened her career.
Professor Pileni's resignation from the journal provides an insight into the conditions for free speech at our universities and other academic institutions in the aftermath of 9/11. This situation is a mirror of western society as a whole---even though our academic institutions should be havens in which research is evaluated by its intrinsic excellence, not its political correctness.
In Professor Pileni's country, France, the drive to curb the civil rights of professors at the universities is especially strong, and the fight is fierce.
I will conclude with two points. First, the cause of 9/11 truth is not one that she has taken up, and the course of action she chose was what she had to do to save her career. I harbor no ill feelings toward Professor Pileni for the choice she made.
Second, her resignation from the journal because of the publication of our paper implied nothing negative about the paper.
Indeed, the very fact that she offered no criticisms of it provided, implicitly, a positive evaluation--- an acknowledgment that its methodology and conclusions could not credibly be challenged.

2019.10.17 20:36 thehowlinggreywolf 4th Parl. Speech from the Throne

My Fellow Canadians,
Honourable Members of the House of Commons,
As a representative of Her Majesty the Queen, it is my honour to open the first session of the fourth Parliament of Canada by delivering this Speech from the Throne.
Here we stand today as members of parliament ready to take up the next term and carry on our great democratic tradition. We must remind ourselves of why we are here and that is to government this country of ours for all Canadians.
This government ran on a platform of a new hope for Canadian’s. Now here we are in parliament to deliver a new hope for Canadian’s and that is exactly what we will do. We invite the members of the opposition to join us in this but to keep their duty to keep the government in check and ensure we are doing our best.
On the climate & economy, This government will bring in a green new deal to fight climate change, the first step of this will be declaring a climate emergency, climate change threatens all of humankind and the first step to fighting it would be to recognize the danger it poses. We will then work to put a national price on carbon. Bring in a national pipeline safety plan. Protect our Carbon Sinks, End Fossil Fuel subsidies, plant 10 trees to 1 Canadian. Electrify and expand all public transport including expansion of high speed rail both on existing lines as well creating a new Calgary-Edmonton line. To compliment new renewable energy sources, we will modernize the entire canadian electrical grid. Together, we’re planning to Increase EV sales with incentives, Retrofit all buildings in Canada in 10 years, exceed our emissions targets, close the infrastructure gap and create a Green Economy that works for all Canadians.
On healthcare. This government will bring in a universal pharmacare system to ensure a better healthcare system for all Canadians. We will create a road map to bringing dental, visual and mental healthcare into our healthcare system by working with the existing business, workers and current healthcare system to find what solution works best. As a stopgap measure we will bring in dental and eye care coverage for families with incomes under 70k. We will also work to stop any privatization of healthcare.
On education. This government will begin by removing interest on student loans ensure we don't drive our current and former university students further into debt. Much like healthcare we will create a roadmap to fully public post secondary education. It is the best way for a person to get ahead in the modern economy and there should be no financial barriers to education. As we assess this situation we will look at the best way to remove all student debt and converting all loans to grants as well.
On affordable housing. In order to combat rising house prices and housing being used as an investment we will bring in a strong foreign buyers tax as well as a speculation/vacancy tax. We will spend all tax revenue from this on affordable housing projects thereby decreasing demand and increasing supply. We will work through a variety of methods to build 500,000 units of affordable housing over the next ten years. We will bring in a sustainable development fund in order to ensure that over time an increasing amount of development in Canada is sustainable and creates a better city or town not just another suburb.
On childcare. This government will bring in $15/day childcare in order to solve the high costs of childcare faced by Canadian families and single parents, as well as get more parents, especially women in the workforce. We will increase funding for afterschool programs to help give children more opportunities. Finally, we will fight for the future of all Canadian children by fighting climate change, creating a green economy, lowering financial barriers to education and expanding our healthcare to name a few.
On phone and internet. This government will nationalize phone and internet infrastructure under a national crown corporation that will charge a small fee for usage we will then use this money to expand rural telecom infrastructure and upgrade urban. We will then work with the provinces to create crown corps in each province to provide market competition to the current big three. We will also make sure net neutrality in Canada stays strong.
On taxes, This government will fix the CRA allowing a $40 billion dollar backlog to be fixed which will provide $2 billion a year in new revenue. We will bring in a wealth tax of 1% on those with assets of $10 million. We will bring in a carbon tax of $25/ton. We will repeal income splitting and revert the corporate tax rate to 2010 levels. This will allow us to fund all of our programs and continue to run a surplus.
On real labour policy. This government will bring in a $15/hour minimum wage and create over a million jobs. Will not use back to work legislation but instead arbitration legislation. Work to study all living wages across the country and produce reports that can be used by workers and unions to help convince their provincial government to raise the minimum as we will be doing the same.
On agriculture. This government will create a national crown corp of agro-dealer networks in order to help family farms become more sustainable, have better access to machinery and expertise as well as provide them with new markets for produce while reducing our overall food waste. Work to lower agricultural sector greenhouse gas emissions and reexamine the wheat board by consulting with farmers and the facts to figure out what works best for the modern world.
On canada post. This government will restore door-to door mail, bring back the postal bank providing more affordable banking options to the whole country as well as do a competitive analysis of canada post to help better determine changes and the role of canada post in the future.
On electoral reform. This government will ensure every vote counts by bringing in an MMP system. We will work to make third parties in elections more transparent in terms of their own funding and advertising. We will also bring forward MP recall giving the people yet another way to hold their elected officials accountable.
On government conduct. We will announce all cabinet changes. Commit to the bipartisanship we worked so hard to create last term. Bring in a policy of de-smithization in order to get away from the conservative party traditions of not debating in good faith, only support your own party, not holding yourself accountable and the various other damages Smith and the conservative party has done to this country.
On Quebec. This government will undo the damage the conservative party has done. We will restore the $4 billion in equalization cuts, remove the noble titles Quebec has forced upon it and respect the provincial jurisdiction while still working with provinces to accomplish our goals.
On foreign relations. This government will move all foreign aid behind climate goals to help fight climate change abroad as all countries that produce around 1% or less of global GHG emissions make up 80% of global GHG emissions. We will end the race to the bottom where government look to cut costs and wages to attract business instead we will advocate for better workers rights in developing nations. We will also stand up to countries who do not respect and abuse human rights, we will work with our allies in order to do this as we are much more powerful when we work together.
On the military. This government will depoliticize the procurement process inorder to ensure that the military gets what it needs not what politicians want. We will demilitarize the coast guard as they are not a military branch and never should have been. We will also work to expand mental and physical health supports for our veterans and treat them with the respect they deserve.
On social change. This government will ensure legal equality as that is the necessity for positive social change. We will study racism and descrimination in all forms because in order to fight an issue you must work to understand it and its causes. Finally we will be advocates for all Canadians as social change cannot be brought about by law, it has to come from the people and by being leaders in our community we can positively bring about this change.
On indigenous policy. This government will work to end boil water advisories as it is unacceptable that in Canada there are people without access to clean drinking water. We will implement UNDRIP fully and the recommendations of the TRC. Finally we will take a bold new step and ask, is this system really working. We will do this by doing a head to toe assessment of the reserve system and the indian act putting indigenous people at the heart of this assessment and working with them as partners to find a solution.
On crime and justice. This government will work to test community policing as a way to reduce crime in a way that works with the community and repairs relations with the community. We will prioritize rehabilitation over punishment to help reduce reoffending rate, provide education opportunities and mental healthcare. We will use a compassionate and facts based approach to our justice system. We will help provide better opportunities for our young people with more funding for youth centers and after school programs as these are proven ways to help put our children on the right track no matter where they come from.
On immigration, this government will hold the level of immigration to 1% of the population. We will do this to ensure that everyone who becomes a Canadian citizen has the opportunity to work and make a better life for themselves. With Brexit looming and the possibility of a no deal growing stronger every day we will prepare for an increase of immigration from the UK as they will deal with food and medicine shortages as well as an economic recession. We will increase funding support for language courses and work with private sponsor to help bring refugees into welcoming Canadians communities that are ready to help them become Canadians. In addition to that we will promote interculturalism, in a diverse and multicultural society it is the next step to growing as a country, culture and as individuals.
On homelessness, this government will bring in a national homelessness strategy to tackle the complex issue of homelessness at every point, By providing $2 billion dollars of funding we can help establish and expand support networks and social services to stop short term homelessness work to decrease long term homelessness and stop homelessness from happening in the first place. Our plans for expanded mental health services, higher wages, affordable housing will also help tackle the root causes of homelessness in Canada.
On the opioid crisis, this government will treat addiction as a health problem as a way to compassionately fight the opioid crisis. We will work with provinces and municipalities to provide more safe consumption sites as they are proven to save lives, lower usage rates, help prevent long term health issues and allow for greater investment into wrap around services. On fiscal responsibility this government will invest in Canadians no matter where they live, where they come from or what their background is. We will invest in the future of Canada by fighting climate change and providing more education opportunities. We will raise the standard of living with pharmacare and our real labour policy. We will lower the cost of living with childcare, our national telecom plan and our affordable housing plan. We will do all of this and much more while aiming to run a surplus of $4 billion dollars.
I would like to end this speech by telling Canadians a new hope is here for you. We will deliver on this to create a better Canada for everyone. I would once again like to remind this parliament that we are here for all Canadians and we are here to do what is right for them. To leave you all with a quote from the greatest Canadian Tommy Douglass “Courage, my friends; ‘tis not too late to build a better world” and to that I ask the members of this parliament and the people of Canada, won't you join us in building a better Canada and a better world?
Mes chers compatriotes canadiens,
